Good Sunday, everyone. We are back to tracking another round of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain across the state. This mess rolls from south to north early today and is likely to cause widespread travel issues. It doesn’t stop here… another round may be on the way later Monday into early Tuesday.
Some headlines to start you off…
– All areas will get in on wintry weather, at least at the start. Southern areas will go over to rain fairly early in the day. That rain line creeps northward into the afternoon and evening.
– There’s some indication of this trying to be a bit more of a snow maker across the northern half of the state. That will be interesting to watch. Can we get a narrow thumping band to set up somewhere?
– Areas that do start as snow will go over to sleet and freezing rain for a while. Rain will try to take over by the end of the day.
– With colder air in place and a colder road temp… travel will be greatly impacted by whatever falls.
– The rain across southeastern Kentucky will be locally heavy through Monday and could create additional high water problems.
– Whatever is falling on Monday will go back over to a light wintry mix of a touch of snow from west to east.
Many models have been going back and forth on how much of a wave develops Monday night into early Tuesday. The NAM has the best signal for something on Tuesday…
We will have to wait and see just how much this pattern has left in the tank.
Looking down the road… watch next weekend into early the following week for a slow moving storm system rolling in from the southwest. The GFS hit our current pattern from a week out… it will do horribly with the pattern for the next week.
What about the pattern as we get closer to Christmas? The European Ensembles have a pretty good setup for cold and snow lovers across the country…
Let’s get back to the stuff we have out there today. Track away…

Post the weather from where you live and take care.
You are the best forecaster around. How long will it take to saturate the air and start to squeeze out some precip?
Snow here in western KY, roads are quacking coating over.
Quacking?
quickly
So northeastern ky still has no
Advisory or anything!? Really???
Funny thing is that NE KY may end up with the most wintry weather out of all of this!
Snow mixed with sleet on NW side of Bowling Green, KY @ 27 degrees. Just a light dusting so far.
Moderate sleet and snow mix 3 miles NW of Bowling Green, KY.
Flurries flying in Harrodsburg.
Radar showing returns but you know the drill. The V word.
24 up here on the ridge in greenup county..no precip yet
Thanks again, Chris. Looks like little amounts here in southwestern Ohio but I’m ok with that as we still have a pretty five inches on the ground here and my two youngest grandchildren have a birthday party at Chucky cheese (sp?) early this afternoon.
Looking forward with this weather pattern, I dare to hope for a white Christmas.
Everyone around here wants to know where I get my info so far in advance of just about any other source. I spread the word about you and this blog! My husband is a yard foreman at his employment. Not only does he ask me about the weather based on your info but now job sites are asking him! I must say you’ve impressed many of your neighbors. Keep doing what you do as so many appreciate it. For every one thankful post there’s a mountain of those who don’t post and appreciate it just as much!
Not t I at this is a surprise but we have 33 degree rain in knox lol
Murray, KY just got upgraded from a wwa to an ice storm warning for another quarter to a third inch of ice from freezing rain otw here.
Snow in Frankfort
Light freezing rain in Nicholasville. 🙁
It has been freezing Rain here. I can hear the Ice on my Heat Pump.
Sounds like heavy ice falling in Burgin.
ice has been falling in Irvine for the last hour. everything is iced over and it is still coming down.
Snow here in Lawrenceburg. Already covered the ground–looks like it may end up being more snow from this winter weather advisory than we had from our winter storm warning on Friday 🙂
good sunday morning….enjoy the weather out there and be careful.
Sleet and freezing rain in Mt. Sterling
Seems to be freezing rain here just north of Hazard.
Now a mix of sleet and freezing rain–27 degrees in Lawrenceburg. The roads are very icy. Stay safe!
Sleeting in NW lex and has been for a while. Picking up in intensity. Temp 27 F…..Looking at the radar, and this is just a guess—- it looks like the precip will be exiting before it has time to change to rain, unless more develops.
Everything is covered in ice here on Lakeville in Magoffin County!
Snow is coming down pretty good in Flatwoods, KY. I’d say an inch and still falling. Seems like ice underneath. Everything is white here.
Had been a snow-sleet-freezing rain mix in my part of Hardin county long enough to cover everything again with a layer of ice as thick as what we received Friday (maybe .2 inches?). Currently under a small dry slot thankfully. I hope the temps rise quickly. I do not want ice. Temp is 25 here right now.
Pouring the snow here in greenup county..about 1.5 inches so far..25 degrees
All slice (sleet & ice) in north Madison. Accumulating snow is an anomalous event, south of the river.
I seem to recall the temperatures were expected to be colder several days ago. Thought the temps were supposed to be about ten degrees colder this coming week as well. Not a bad thing though 🙂
I seem to recall the temps being forecasted low to mid 30s for Lexington area then the bottom falls out after Mon/Tues.
Could have swore we were single digits to even zero expected, but at least ten degrees higher now. Just making sure not going even more nuts.
Single digits wasn’t till Wednesday or Thursday AM
snowing pretty hard here since abt 7am the roads are completely white
Nothing but freezing rain for the last couple hours in Berea; 27 degrees when it started. Tons of moisture in the air, temps were solidly in the 20’s and still not a flake to be seen. Berea Snow Dome, you are truly a cruel goddess. Trees, structures, and neighborhood roads look covered to different degrees. I’d rather it be raining frogs than this demonic ice, but there you have it.
I haven’t seen Bubba post this morning. How are you Yankee, carpetbaggers up around Richmond faring so far?
I was out looking at the falling and accumulating slice.
Print these out and tape them to your windows, it will help ease the sting of looking at everyone’s snow on CB’s Twitter feed

FINALLY! We have SNOW in Russell!!! I was wondering if the rivers (Ohio, Little Sandy, Big Sandy) were in some way warming the air causing us to miss out on snow! Thank you, Chris. The time you put into this blog I’m sure is mostly (if not all) on your own time. How many people would do that? Merry Christmas to you and your family! May the Lord bless you!
Seriously miserable rain here in good ole London. Just counting down until the January blowtorch that is sure to come
Same for East Bernstadt. No snow or ice on the ground.Just a dreary mist falling.Around 34* this afternoon.I always prepare since I live on a difficult hill.So far this year nothing that I needed to prepare for but I am one of those that it seems just as soon as I ignore it the big one will hit.Really dreary day for sure.Everything is saturated.
What is your definition of blowtorch?
Very heavy snow falling in Louisville
Snowing to beat the band in Louisville. I would estimate an inch an hour. Visibility diminished so be careful when driving.
Christmas came early for the metro.
Two inches of snow in East Morehead, br made the switch to freezing rain about 1/2 hour ago. Things are slick/messy!
Snow is coming down pretty good in Shelbyville. Roads are covered.
Burst of heavy snow in Valley Station deposited 0.7″ in 20-25 minutes.
Grayson has 2-3 inches of snow right now with temps around 27 and freezing rain beginning.
Looking at the cams that CB has on his blog looks like Louisville has been the big winner in snow Kentucky wise I-64 is covered in snow again.
7″ and counting. Central WV
Looks like we are going to end with an all snow event. I do think that the trend has been broken for counties along the Ohio. It has to break soon for the rest of the state. Stay safe…
The rain fall’s mainly on the plains in Spain and Southeast ky…
All snow here in Northern Kentucky (Burlington, Boone County near Florence). Started around 9am.
We had between 5-6 inches of snow from the first storm, and about a quarter of an inch of ice.
I grew up in Nelson County and remember plenty of nice snows so hang tight “down staters”, you’ll get your turn.
Yep, me too, Kris…still in Bardstown. I think it must have “all snowed-out” back in 77–78 and then in ’94, because all we get blessed with now is the dreaded ice! I remember Dec.’04-we got iced over so bad, but just 10 miles to the north and beyond, they had almost a foot of snow. My cousins near E-Town that event also had all snow. We are in the “Ice Dome” down here once again today. It was sleeting so hard at one time around 4:45 this morning that my dogs wouldn’t stop growling & barking because it sounded like someone tapping on the windows.lol.
Good day to lay in and watch the Bengals become the Bungles today..Colts 38 Bungles 17
This winter is already off to a great start. 4″ on the ground in my backyard. Great to see CB looking down the road to more wintry weather. This could be a wonderful December for snow fans!!!
Its all about location this winter fan has had nothing but 6+ inches of rain since Thursday. Roads are still closed in Knox and Whitley county
I feel your pain Andy, I for one won’t tolerate another miserable rain filled year like this one. I’m spending this day stuck inside writing resumes to send out tomorrow. I fully intend to leave this “rain hell” for good…..I really cannot mentally handle this anymore. Atlanta, Phoenix, anywhere with very little annual rainfall…..
Awoke to a light glaze on car’s windows. Windshield had thin layer of ice, sleet. Minor snow accumulations on driveway about a 0.1″.
Then a burst of heavy snow betw 8:55 and 9:25am dumped 0.7″ snow on snowboard.
Snow depth at my house in Valley Station is 2.8″.
Hey Mike, I have about 3.9 inches near Iroquois Park. Picked up a little more with that short burst this morning. Very pretty.
Living in the southwest part of the county, we got quite a bit less than your area, the airport, and the east end.
Got absolutely hammered with heavy snow in LaGrange, KY. Drove up for the weekend from Lexington… Amazing what a few miles makes… Easily picked up 2-3″ in our heavy band that moved through! That puts 6-8″ on the ground in this area… Look as if we are headed back home to ice this afternoon? Sure is pretty.
Okay… measured 6 different spots… Avg. of 2.5″ of new snowfall this morning…
Well, a large barge and an aircraft carrier just floated down my street! Anybody want to come help me build an Ark…..we here in Southeast Kentucky and Northern East Tennessee will most definitely need one before this insanely miserable Fall\Winter are over. My first call for this weekend through April…….40-50″ of cold 33 degree rain.
If your just now building your a little late 😉
Never fear, more rain for next weekend and then insane warmth for January. So much for those awesome long range models and analog years that are nothing more than junk science. Kids will be out of school in 5 years, I’ve always wanted to move to Colorado since visiting in the 1990s. Kentucky, namely southern and Se Ky are miserable places to be
Insane warmth? So you are trusting the same models that had it cold in December to be right about January? I don’t trust the models one day out much less 3 weeks…
Very true!
The last time I went out it was cold and the calendar says Dec.
Cold? The average temp for December has been far above normal so far. We had some days in the 60’s!!! 20’s and 30’s are average for this time of year.
like I said last time I went out it was cold I didn’t not say it had been cold for the entire month of Dec
My point is this–some of the models were showing below zero temps by Tuesday and eight inches of snow this past week. Why would we even think of putting trust in the models for January when it is December 8th?
Chris just tweeted looks like everybody is going to pick up some snow Tuesday. the snow will be lite which means ankle biters for all of us.
Wow. Went to bed last night with the local weather people calling for a dusting. Awoke this morning and there is at least 3 inches of snow. Roads are a mess. The nws here in charleston really missed this one.
About a half inch of stuff in Frankfort this morning, mostly sleet feel in my area with mix of snow and freezing rain
Picked up about 4 inches here in greenup county!
I think the current snowcover will have a play in how the next system behaves
Looks like the precip will be gone before any switch over to rain, temp still 28 in frankfort, predicting temps in the mid 30s for today??
Freezing drizzle in Louisvile
Just plain nasty outside. Temp around 30–enough sleet/freezing rain/snow to cover the roads. My yard is like an ice skating rink. Time to go have some fun?
Noticed on WKYT they have the temperatures:
Monday: 33/18
Tuesday: 28/10
Wednesday: 21/9
Thurday: 26/17
on the 7 day planner. Is that still the thinking? I have noticed other places have temperatures higher for all these days now. And they really do not say anything about the rain-snow.
For all of us snow lovers….turn on the Lions – Eagles game…….It is snowing like crazy. I hope that happens here……soon!!!!
Same deal in Baltimore.
It already has depending on where your at in KY
We have dodged two crippling ice bullets so far. Curious if our luck persists since seems “obvious” we should have more of a chance for big ice events rather than snow events this winter. A big diagonal chunk of the state looked like ice doom just a few days ago and warm air saved the day. Winning! 🙂 For now at least………..
exaggeration 😉
Nashville also escaped with only a little bit of ice and snow overnight.
Areas west of Nashville not so lucky.
Won’t let me post!
Trees down from ice in counties west of Nashville.
At least temps here are now above freezing, even if damage already done and many without power.
I guess the stupid spam filter won’t let me post D***son County (two counties west of Nashville).
I need to move back to Maryland for the snows!!!! Geez……Kentucky sure has some funky weather!!!!
Does anyone else notice that the precip seems to always exit before it is forecast to? At least the last few times? Like it was supposed to change to rain this after noon and continue into tonight (even per NWS), but the precip ended even before noon and is gone, so how could it rain tonight?
Moisture reforming south of KY, but most of that Should stay in east KY!
Exactly what we need lord knows we haven’t had enough LoL
we ended up getting 3 to 4 inches of snow here then the sleet and freezing rain came and stuck to everything. The house has a layer of ice all over it and our outside awning by our shop came down due to the weight! The high today has not gone above 32 deg! The roads were horrible earlier today!!!!! Took my parents 1 1/2 hrs to get from Flatwoods to Grayson this morn which norm takes abt 20 or 30 mins.
Kudos to you Chris. Again the NWS here in Charleston WV.
Missed this snow by a landslide. No winter weather advisory issued until its actually 5″ deep here in Hurricane, WV. I read your blog and planned ahead last night. Plowed snow all day today. Thanks for your blog Chris. Picked up close to 6″ in Hurricane WV and surrounding counties.
I agree with Tim. I live in Teays valley, WV and your the only one we can count on for accurate predictions…. 6″ of snow and NWS in Charleston predicted 1″ or less with no advisories last night. Thankfully we watch your blog and knew better. Keep it up and don’t forget about us in WV!
Temp has never gotten above freezing here today. Roads still look like a mess.
Southern Rowan County (Morehead) and Carter County secondary roads are scary. No school in RC per WKYT.
Wonder if Chris will update this evening. Moisture is coming and it is 32 at my house. Low’s tonight suppost to be 35…
Still 31 in Frankfort with more moisture coming in, I guess this is what’s suppose to turn to rain over nite with temps rising above freezing?
Strange weather day in KY, temps warmup after dark!
This happens a lot. When systems come in from the south they bring warm air with them a lot of the time.
