Good Wednesday everyone and happy travels on what is usually the busiest travel day of the year. As is tradition here on the blog… the Wednesday before Thanksgiving pays respect to a classic movie wrapped around this holiday… Planes, Trains and Automobiles. This is actually one of my favorite movies and that should give you some insight into the warped mind of your friendly weather dude.
Let’s talk about the weather instead of going all Roger Ebert on you.
This continues to be a VERY busy weather period that will have more twists and turns than an afternoon soap opera. The first twist comes today as colder air shows up across the northern half of the state. Highs in this region will struggle today into the low and mid 40s after starting out in the 20s. Clouds will increase as warmer air surges in from the southwest. Speaking of…. southern and southwestern Ky will be near 60 for highs. This warm front will cause a batch of rain to break out along and north of it. These rains will be steadier across the north and west and you can track the drops here…
The more I look at today’s precip moving in… the more I think a touch of sleet will try to mix in with the rain for areas just to our north.
You can track today’s big temp spread here…
While on the temp theme… let’s start there in breaking down the big swing ahead for Thursday into Friday. Warm air will surge in here from south to north late tonight into Thanksgiving. The cold front will be to the west of us as will the main shield of rain for much of the day. Some sunshine and a strong southwesterly wind will be with us and should boost temps well into the 60s with a 70 possible. The front will come crashing in from the west Thursday evening into the nighttime hours and temps will tank! Readings will drop by 30 degrees in just a few hours and you can see that nicely here on the GFS…
The temp map tomorrow is going to be AMAZING to see!!
A band of gusty rains will be along and behind the front Thursday into early Friday. The cold air is going to catch the back edge and likely change the rain over to a period of sleet and snow that can last a few hours…
A warm ground strongly argues against snow sticking… but that doesn’t keep the models from showing it. Here is a look at the GFS snowfall and sleetfall forecast during this time…
Once again… it will be VERY difficult to put anything on the ground. It would have to come down pretty hard to do that and, while that is a possibility, I am leaning more toward a quick elevated surface coating in some areas early Friday morning.
With a lot of moisture and temps heading into the 20s by Friday morning… some slick spots could develop on area roads… especially bridges and overpasses. The snow and sleet will end quickly from west to east as skies become partly cloudy. It will be a blustery day with highs in the low and mid 30s. Happy shopping!
In looking ahead to next week… things continue to look very active with another rain and snow system later Monday through Wednesday with another possibly storm by the following weekend. The overall pattern continues to grow colder and colder with each system passing through here and this is a great setup for cold and snow lovers as we head into December.
I know I said the winter forecast would be out by now… but the active weather pattern this week is going to prevent that from happening. I will get it on here as soon as things calm down a bit later this weekend.
I will have an update later today so check back. I leave you with this…

So is the 2.50-3″ of rain no longer happening? Not surprising of it isn’t.
Cool, but what happened to all the heavy rain? I thought we were supposed to get a lot of heavy rainfall. Did that change?
mornin’ all. In Xenia Ohio, with family celebrating Turkey Day. FLOOD WATCH here, hmmmm, no mention of snow, hmmmm.
A quote from yesterday’s post “Add it all up and the rain totals from today through Thanksgiving will average 1″-3”. We still have today and Thursday to get through and some places got a inch or better of rain yesterday
fairly consistent gfs and nam. dont know how much will stick but i’d bet for alot of us located in western and northern kentucky that a period of heavy snow is likely for several hours, not saying it will be a snowstorm but folks maybe surprised. the cold air seems to be moving a good bit faster with each run. FLOOD WATCH here in kenton county.
31°F air temp, 24°F wind chill at my house in Anderson Co. this morning. BRR…

No, it didn’t change.
So now it’s 33°F and the big swath of moisture is moving into central KY. Hmm… Might there be a flurry or two this morning?
I live on top of a hill just north of Hazard. When I went out to get into my car this morning, it looked like a heavy frost. But it was ice, not frost.
It’s sleeting here in Louisville. And cold . . .
Chris, the “those aren’t pillows” part of that movie cracks me up every time I watch it. LOL
But the amount that had been shown consistently this week as now went now.
An interesting thing going on the last few days, is that in Fairbanks, Alaska, they have been enduring an on-going ice-storm, which is very unusual, since they are usually sub-zero by this time of year. They have gotten upward of a n inch of ice accumulation in the last several days in parts of the area.
impressive radar……too bad it isn’t reaching the ground!!!!
Really interesting system, and the radar is very impressive indeed!
Possible LP development in the Boothill of MO?????
I can’t recall the last time it stayed in the mid-30s all day long, with RAIN all day long. This is about as nasty as it gets. Yuck.
There is some freezing rain going on up in Indianapolis!
And I have to drive through it later this evening!
So basically the 12Z runs of NAM and GFS both agree on the timing of the precip. Peak is around dawn Friday. But what they don’t agree on is temperature at the surface. NAM doesn’t even take LEX to 32°F at ALL on Friday, while GFS takes LEX below freezing by 7:00. So it’s really hard to say whether this’ll end as snow or not. But the moral is, it’s a non-issue.
How come it doesn’t change over?
This is not related to weather, but I would love to know how Chris gets the actual videos on the site, and not just a link to them.
I’m creating a virtual field trip for my students and would like to put actual video into it, not just the link.
Anyone know how to do that?
Any sort of blog platform will place the video on a blog. If you want to place the videos in a power point presentation, then you must first download the video onto your computer.
Thank you, Tom. So, once I download them, I should be able to put them in PPT…I’ll try it.
We are getting some pretty good rain here in Pikeville, Things are not looking up as far as snow goes for my area in the near future though 🙁
I’ll be in the discussion area on my website http://www.ekywx.com if anyone wants to drop by and say hi or discuss the storm 🙂
Its good things, keep share
Thanks for sharing!
