Good evening, gang. An arctic boundary is diving in from the north and will bring a band of flurries or light snow to parts of the region. That will also set the stage for a very cold night and Thursday across the state. What happens after that?
This is where things get a little more interesting. A southern storm system continues to trend a bit colder as it throws moisture into the state from west to east late Friday into Friday night. Our in house computer model at the station shows the mix of rain and snow working in….
Many of the other models are similar in showing front end snow and a mix Friday night into Saturday morning. The GFS spits out accumulations…
The Canadian and European Models are very similar.
One way you know winter means business… every time there is even a small chance for winter weather… it happens. Folks who continue to forecast a big change to warmth need to take a step back and look at what’s happened and continues to happen. Can we get a few warm days from time to time? Sure… but this is not a pattern that will feature anything more than that.
See you guys tonight. Take care.
The predominate weather we have had in this area is cold cold rain
thanks, Chris! ready for more wintry weather.
I would love to say can’t wait for some more snow! But always had in Richmond is cold rain cold rain cold rain cold rain and it continues to look like you know
Where do you get the GFS Models from?
Where do you get the GFS Models?
Hey look at the fence along the Ohio River. Ha! Ha! Hopefully this system comes in much colder. Would be nice to see it move about 100 miles south.
I guess it will be spitting snow from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. not much of an accumulation
I’m trying to build a house, Bailey… this weather is not helping!!!! 🙂
Not sure why you keep saying the models keep coming in colder? Does that mean Northern Kentucky just keeps getting colder and Central Kentucky 35 rain. Get excited for nku. But not for Cky!
Oh boy, another 1/64 inch accumulation of snice, followed by 2 inches of 32.1 degree rain! I can hardly wait……..
BigPoppaSnow
hehe My thoughts exactly. I’m dreaming of a “wet”….Christmas….. (no need to dream of what will probably be reality)
Ya’ll better calm down a lil bit…Jeeesshhh
That sure is a lot of fancy info that says mainly some snow to the north and scraps for us south of that 😉 🙂 Fear the mullet!
Like. But that would be a boring blog
Wondering why the WKYT forecast often does not reflect what is said here? For example for tonight into Thursday it says nothing about precip?
Chris usually sniffs out the colder runs of the models before others play last minute catchup, so I fill confident that this winter might be making its own rules and not going by the underplay rules that most METS live by in KY!
Most Mets do NOWCASTING, Chris you are old school with forecasting, thanks 🙂
I depend on your posts to help us through each day. You are a good person. You go above and beyond what you have to do. You do it to help others. I want you to know you are appreciated.
Come on people we live in the Ohio Valley not the upper midwest. Were not even into winter and were well below average in the temperature department and above average and some way above average in snowfall. May I remind you last Thursday most of the Commonwealth was nearing record highs and if im not mistaken a few tied or broke there record highs low to mid 70’s were recognize statewide for high temps. Twenty four hours later parts of Kentucky were shoveling snow I realize the snow accumulations wasnt statewide but the artic cold was. For parts of Kentucky this is day 6 of snow being on the ground that is impressive for the middle of winter let alone the second week of December. As far as a warming trend developing its possible and normal there are some bloggers that apparently think that Kentucky should stay in the 20’s and 30’s for highs right through winter. Once again if you think that your living in the wrong region that region does exist its called the upper midwest. Some folks in Louisville complain because they only got 2-5 inches of snow while southern Indiana got close to 9-10 inches. Central and southern Kentucky complain that north central Kentucky gets 2-5 inches of snow while central and southern Kentucky gets a dusting to two inches. Either way you slice it or dice it there are always going to be people no matter what happens you just cant make happy. Look at the big picture winter is way ahead of schedule pretty much nationwide and for people that is unhappy with the way winter is going I truly dont know what you expect. Its still early December plenty of winter to go.
Most of us here are folks who remember the winters of the 70’s and 80’s where we did in fact get annual snowfalls of 6+” almost every year…..those winters here rivaled those in the Midwest. I lived in Tennessee approximately 45 miles south of where I live now in Middlesboro and in those years even Tennessee winters rivaled those of the Midwest. Believe it or not, there has been a climate shift and that is why we snow lovers are ansy and complain.
snowfalls of 6+” per storm, annually that is….
Climate shift or maybe its climate cycles and we are mistaken it as a climate shift. I blame this on Al Gore for starting a weather political debate years ago.
Take a moment to look up the historical data. We had three brutal winters in a row in 1977, 1978, and 1979. In December of 1982 and 1984 we had record warmth—warmth that had not been approached since. We had brutal cold in January and/or February of some other years. Moral of the story–the last winter that even approached the temps of the late 70’s was 2002-2003.
Well said, and agree, this is officially FALL, winter starts December 20th or so, as Chris posted their are always a few mild days here and their but cold will rule!
Rug Roh! If Jeff Hamlin sees this post, you will get ten demerits for pontificating 🙂
Bubba keep talking and I will make it an electric “fence”! 😉
Yeah – I need to lighten up, after all 1/4 inch of snow so far beats nothing…Well, uh, actually…
Some of the whiners and complainers on here really need to get a life.
YOU’RE a towel! A little Towlie humor for the evening 🙂
I thought I was the only one that would randomly throw out that Towlie line. Good to see another South Park fan.
LOL! Well, then, what does that say about those that complain about the whiners & complainers?
BigPoppaSnow (who’s patiently been waiting for 6-8 inches of snow for 15 years)
I don’t think it is really whining and complaining. They really just want to say something and it is easier to just repeat the same stuff over and over. And honestly, I like the predictability of it. Sort of offsets the unpredictability of the climate and weather.
Mostly a rain event with some quick hitting clippers next week that look to steer to the east. The blowtorch January is fast approaching, enjoy this wimpy December
Bryant, help me understand you its December 11th and so far this has been anything but a wimpy December. So right there your logic is completely invalid. Out of curiosity please humor me what is your version of a blowtorch temp wise?
Sure, it’s been a hot start if you live 40 or so miles on either side of the Ohio River. Unfortunately, that represents a small sliver of the whole pie. Location, location, location. And, for the most part, CB and some of you are fired up over what a very small part of KY is getting in winter weather. You’ll understand the phrase “blowtorch” when temps stay in the 50’s or above for daytime highs for the better part of January.
Small sliver? What you just listed represents half of the states population.
Oh to whom do we owe our First World problems?
The latest GFS is still trending colder for this weekend
LOL, meaning an even colder rain for the majority of Kentucky. Don’t fool yourself, Prelude, this is a rainstorm moving in.
Nobody is arguing that, just a reminder for you to look at the calendar. Basically what im saying it’s still autumn not winter. 12 degrees tonight. Blowtorch, what?what?what?what? January might have to open the windows? What? 50’s and 60’s coming in January? What? Above average temps? What?
I bet February will have a heat advisory
I bet January will have an excessive heat warning. Beware for the Blowtorch.
While we here in the lower 48 have been enjoying this early start to winter, Alaska has been having the warmest December temps on record in at least 70 years. http://www.climatecentral.org/news/while-most-of-u.s.-froze-parts-of-alaska-set-record-highs-16817
That must of been last week because I looked at the Alaska weather today and most of the state is below 0 now for high temps, they might want to update that since it is saying the warmest December 11 days in???
