Good Thursday, everyone. We have a frigid day in progress across the bluegrass state and this cold air will play a role in the next system rolling into town. That arrives later Friday with snow and rain and that ushers in another messy weekend in the bluegrass state.
Let us begin with the precious present. Temps to start us out today will be in the single digits for parts of the north and northwest. Low to mid teens will be common for the rest of the state. A leftover snow flurry will be around for southeastern Kentucky.
Our weekend system throws clouds our way on Friday as moisture pushes in from the west. Low level cold air will be hanging around and this air is dry in nature. With low dewpoints … sleet and snow will likely break out on the leading edge of the main precipitation shield. This can put some accumulations down Friday night and early Saturday morning.
Light rain will likely take over as we go into Saturday, but that won’t last long. The low goes by to our northeast and we get a change to light snow Saturday night with snow showers into Sunday. The GFS matches the forecast we’ve been talking about…
With this storm not being as strong as it looked a few days ago, temps on Sunday won’t be as cold as I once thought. Instead of low 20s we will be talking about upper 20s.
As we watch the northwesterly flow after this… a system dives in here at some point by the middle of next week. This shows up well on the GFS at 500mb…
That can bring a round of light snow to those along its path. It will also bring about another shot of very cold air. Check out what comes in behind it…
That moves through and sets the stage for a very interesting setup by next weekend… the weekend before Christmas. Another MAJOR arctic attack will be diving into the country, but this time should be aimed farther east than the last one. That could also fuel another prolonged winter weather event for much of the country… again, centered farther east and south than the last one. Check out the flow upstairs for that weekend…
With this kind of a pattern, it significantly ups the chance for major cold and snow around here from just before Christmas through the new year.
Have a great day and take care.
Somebody in SE Ky must have turned thier heat up and left the windows open far from the coldest temps of the season here
tell me about it … I woke up thinking it was going to be like 16 degrees, but I opened the door and let the dog out and thought that it wasn’t that cold, so I checked the temp and it said it was 27 degrees …. big difference !!
As far as snow for a lot of us, the Talking Heads summed it up well, “Same as it ever was.” Wise words from the song, “Once in a Lifetime”.
What a cold morning! 13° here in Lexington, though the forecast low from several sites I saw were ranging between 9-12°F. Not as cold as thought but Henderson county, KY dropped to 0°!!!
on the opposite side we are at 27 degrees this AM far from coldest temps of the season here and far from the mid teens
9 above here in Lawrenceburg with very little snow cover. That is colder than we had at any time in 2012 or 2013. Last time it was this cold was in January 2011 when the temp fell to -2. That was with a nice snowpack.
10 in Frankfort this morning, coldest here to since 3 years ago!
It’s 8 degrees here this morning. According to the local met, it’s the coldest temp since February 2011
Forecast for this weekend = Cold rain
Forecast for next weekend = Colder rain
BigPoppaSnow
do not discount the over performing Lake effect snow. that alone could bring you at least A half of inch.
well that depends on you now doesn’t it 😉
Forecast for January, coldest rain of the season.
Well, thus far this cold outbreak has yielded less snow and less cold than I had at my house before Thanksgiving…then the next storm…you know the drill…
Single digits with no snow cover is impressive.
CB needs to have a complaint line. Its too cold its not cold enough we never get any snow back in the 80’s Kentucky would get snow all the time. There is a snow dome, the moisture fizzles out before the cold gets here. Look at the dry slot coming. Cold rain for the weekend. The 50’s are coming. The computer models are terrible. Get ready for some weird blowtorch weather coming in January. Good grief its the weather not the end of the world. Too much whining and belly aching its a weather blog not I want to complain because the forecast high was 30 but it got to 35 instead. I was suppose to get six inches of snow but only got three. The vent and complain blog quite ridiculous
You must live in the snow zone of northern Kentucky. I’m sure you northern folks never gripe when you get the shaft, LOL.
And, yes, I’m adamant that the blowtorch January will happen. I follow a bunch of big dog pro mets and the consensus is: January will feature WARMTH. As I’ve said, winter lovers rejoice why the good stuff his here (for some of you). As we all go WARM from the ensuing blowtorch by early January.
Go ahead, what is your forecast for jan? Give me actually temps? Actual weekly temps!!
Put it on record instead of just saying Blowtorch!
Dude, that forecast was made months ago, before the current pattern was set. It’s all the patterns. We may have a warmer than normal January, but I don’t think I would call it a “blowtorch”
Yes Bryant I know the January blowtorch is on its way will have a heat advisory for January. Im putting up my winter apparel come January shorts t-shirts and flip flops. As I shake my head and roll my eyes
First world problems and boredom, not to forget that negativity breeds negativity.
The temps were negative in some spots 😉
Then in theory there is hope for those currently unhappy!
Is it me, or did the 12z run of the GFS get a little colder for this weekend?
Probably colder for NKY, 35 rain in cky
BTW I’m not complaining, I’m just stating facts.
I cant complain about what I cant control–NOBODY CAN CONTROL.
yep the ole UPSLOPE will give us a couple inches. Im going out on limb as I do …. I predict a WHITE XMAS for CENTRAL/EASTERN.SE KY with 3 plus inches for sum.
I do hope you’re right Rolo, however, I’m going to contradict your forecast and say that SE.KY will receive 3+” of cold rain. For C.KY, far E.KY, and N.KY maybe snow
