Good Saturday, friends. Mother nature is one ugly lady out there today as we have low clouds, cold temps, rain, snow and a mix going on. All of this will eventually give way to some light snow and snow shower action tonight into Sunday. From there, we set our sites on a wild setup in about a week from now.
Today starts with a slushy light snow for areas along the Ohio River with the greatest concentration around the Covington area. Some of this action MAY get as far south as Interstate 64 for a time. Otherwise… a cold rain takes over as temps warm into the mid and upper 30s.
The storm going by to our east and northeast will pull in colder air tonight and that changes everything over to a period of light snow. Snow showers and flurries will fly into Sunday. The simulated radar from the Hi-Res NAM shows what I’m talking about…
With temperatures hitting the low and mid 20s overnight… some light accumulation will be possible and that could create a couple of slick spots. Winds will be gusty on Sunday as most temps stay in the mid to upper 20s.
A couple of weak systems dive in from the northwest Monday into Tuesday. These could give some areas a band of light snow and flurry action.
The pattern from there will start to get a little wild. We will have a HUGE arctic attack diving into the heart of the country as mild air builds in across the southeast. We will likely see temps mild up for a few days by the end of next week. With such extreme options showing up, the models will show wild swings from run to run.
As we saw a few weeks ago, arctic air is always underplayed by models and this is likely to move in quicker than most of them think next weekend. It is going to go to war with the mild across the southeast and that may put our region back into the winter battleground zone…
That’s a week away, so we will have to see exactly how it all plays out. But, the setup is one that can turn nasty for a lot of real estate across the country.
On a side note… your friendly weatherdude will be ringing the bell for the Salvation Army today at the Fayette Mall. A couple of my fellow WKYT elves (Amber Philpott and Sam Dick ) will be joining me from 2-4 , so come by and say hi and put some money in the kettle.
Have a great day and take care.
Although technically it was a light rain/snow mix as I walked to my car at Louisville Int’l airport about 45 minutes ago, it wasn’t a rain drop or a snowflake, more like a slush drop. The chunks of soft slush were efficient soakers. One would have thought I just went through a soaking rain on my way to the car. It did not stick to the pavement but did provide some slush for the windshield.
41degrees and just a cold KY rain SE side of LEX. Same old story; plenty of moisture, not enough cold air all through the column. Sigh
Wow this post looks like the one the 1st wonder if the results will be the same flooding rains.
If we don’t get some help from the (NAO,AO,) to set up some type of blocking all were going to see is rain, rain and more rain..The southeast ridge is killing us…It may be okay for western parts of the state but it’s hurting the rest of us..Next week looks like you guessed it..TORCHING RAIN.
Thanks Chris. Not looking forward to more cold rain. But it is what it is so we will deal with it and go on. Gotta work today so it fits. ;). Everyone have a great Saturday! Stay safe and dry. GO CATS!!!
More cold rain.
I’m just going sit here and be insanely jealous of friends and family in Western MA where they are getting 5-10 inches of snow today. ;____;
Yet the underplayed arctic air results in mainly rain for us central area folks- every time. We need some of them there generous clippers that are the only thing that give us more than a few inches of snow. We got a few fives and one that was about six that was dry snow and drifted to seem bigger in spots.
I stick with the point that any big frozen system for a lot of us will likely be mainly ice rather than snow. Trend = Reality until a nice big buster creates a new trend and reality.
That is my broken record for the weekend) Everybody stay safe and give the people you love a big hug! 🙂
At least you admitted your broken record this time. Now for me to crank some Nickelback. 😉
Now that is a sad picture. Staring out at the cold rain while listening to Nickleback. That is pretty low.
Look at this photograph…..lol
battlezone means that we will be held prisoner of war by the rain forces.
after millions and millions of raindrops we will be rescued by a few insignificant snowflakes.
Actually an average rain storm is over 1.5 trillion rain drops!
Rain 1.5 trillion, Snow 300. Threeee Huuuunndred! Have to have seen the movie 300 to get that 🙂
THIS IS FENCETUCKKKKYYYYYYY!
Just plain nasty outside. 37 degrees with moderate rain and wind. Good day to stay inside by the fireplace and read a book.
All were seeing right now is arctic air diving into the plains and heads east,It either dries up or leaves us with a cold rain or nothing..Next weekend system basically about the same as last system..Western Ky and points north might get snow/ice again..With no -nao everything is gonna scoot off to the north..Obviously the pacific is driving the pattern right now,,When and if it betrays us were in deep doo doo..Unless you like Blowtorch weather..The nao,ao and pna is looking horrible for the future..So when we start getting troughs at west we will torch..Just ask Blowtorch guy…
Good morning all and Thanks CB for the update. Not sure if I like under 32 and dry or above 32 and rain more. At least with the rain we get the benifits and a possible snow flake. One thing about this system is that the rain snow line is a lot further to the north and not just a short walk across the bridge. Mother Nature is just saving the last for the best. She is going to hammer all of KY with a trend busting snow late into next weekend. Giving the best state the best snow the last week of the year………I HOPE!
it is the season of miracles. and if that happens it would be a major miracle.
Do You Believe In Miracles!!!!! USA beat Russia.
that proves my point it almost requires a miracle to achieve a real decent snow fall.
Winter storm Electra blew a fuse and moved the rain even Further north than expected, northeast US big winner with this, maybe a deck duster later tonight if Chris nails the snow showers, most other METS saying nothing about snow showers for tonight and Sunday?
I’m out ! Broken record. I’m tired of listening. Actually reading
I guess all of that brutally cold Siberian air that was supposed to arrive by Christmas is now not on the agenda. Two days ago, some of the maps showed it firmly in our area, but now it slides off much further north and east. Embrace the suck!
You guys will be delighted to hear that us snow hogs in Northern Kentucky missed out on this one. HUGE forecast bust for the Greater Cinci area. We recieved a light dusting just before midnight, and then it mixed with rain and eventually turned into a plain cold rain. Even Dayton, and Columbus have been mixing and flopping back and forth between rain and snow. With nearly a quarter inch of rain so far this morning it is destroying the beautiful snowpack that we had up here for well over a week! Oh well, I view this is as a “reset button” to help wash away the salt, and old dirty snow along the roadsides. Doubt it will get rid of all the parking lot piles though.
We are now finally coming into the same boat as the rest of state. LOL GRRRR!!!!!!! 😉
T least you guys have had some decent snows thus far….even if you should not gat any more the rest of the year. The rest of us will stay tuned and hope for “the next weekend storm” the rest of the winter season which will probably turn out to be yet another letdown time after time after time……but we still hope.
No delight in this. This system is spreading snow farther north than anyone predicted. The little ice/snowpack that had been on my deck since last Friday is finally gone.
Just a little patch here in frankfort the hateful KY rain has had it’s way, looks like a fairly mild week coming up with some 50s showing up late week, will winter come back with a bang next weekend or a thud ??
This is the first time I see the NWS make a typo as far as i can remember. http://www.crh.noaa.gov/nowcast.php?site=iwx
It says “LOW DOWN” not “SLOW DOWN” I just found it a little funny
On the other side of the half empty-half full scenero,at least we are talking about “snow and cold air” as compared to most of the previous years where we all we heard were warmer then normal temps and little precip all winter season let alone any snow to talk about. This is a very promising pattern that has set up. The same as in winters we talk or were told about decades ago. We did receive the winter storms that we are dreaming of,.but ……… Most of the major snow dumpers didn’t occur until after mid Jan. To early march time frames. So indeed I’m believing the best are yet to come !!
great day to hunker down with some Christmas music, catch up on some reading and some indoor chores.
looking forward to the next snow chance.
go CATS!!!
The team this year is looking more like the “Could of Cats”. They have not won a game yet against a top 25 team.
I saw on some weather site that next week would feature temps 60s to near 70 has anyone else seen that? I would love to be in Lexington to say Hello to those Elves.
I am sure Bryant (aka) “blowtorch” would approve of this 🙂
Lol
The Euro DOES show 60’s and 70’s later next week (and NO snow at all, probably thunderstorms) Though this it just ONE run, so if it shows it again in this next run, then I’ll believe we’ll see 70’s with thunderstorms and heavy rain next week.
Well if it show 60-70’s it ain’t gonna show snow. Has to be 32 or if you live in Ky colder than that. I said earlier this week we would have thunderstorms to snow next weekend. Winter will show up when fall is over. Hopefully this is the blowtorch weather Bryant has been talking about.
as much as I would like to discount what Bryant has been typing on this blog, I think the odds are in his favor.
if we do not begin a Greenland blocking pattern here soon, this winter will be a repeat of last year.
TWC should have used the name “Electra” in a severe spring/summer storm event, not a winter storm.
Guys, I have just been reading3how everyone has already written off the winter or ’13-14. While your predictions may turn out to be true, I think you are jumping the gun just a bit, since calendar winter does not start until December 21. Would I love to see a big dome buster with snow hip deep to a giraffe? You bet I would! But I am not going to give up on winter at this early date. We have already started out better in many parts of the state than we did most to all of last winter. So as much as I love you guys, and reading all the chit chat, please don’t be giving up so quickly (says the eternal optimist! 😉 )
Still say it will snow at some point. And a pretty good one. So, stay positive out there! Winter has yet to begin! Have a great rest of your Saturday, all. GO CATS!!! (they aren’t as good as we had hoped either yet, are they?) 😉
Thanks, Chris. Off the soapbox now. Hope I didn’t offend anyone with my remarks. That was/is not the intention. IF I did, then I apologize. 🙂
C O L D R A I N. We’ve become northern Georgia & southern Tennessee from a winter weather perspective.
BigPoppaSnow (who’d rather floss the cat than listen to another “just wait till next week” snowstorm prediction)
Don’t think anyone has given up on winter yet(Except Toaster Guy)..These glancing cold shots are not going to cut it though..Just need something to flip to give us some blocking to keep the cold longer..PNA is supposed to go neutral or slightly positive so maybe this will help…Seems like we have very few chance’s to get a good winter storm anymore..It’s disappointing to watch a strong system develop and just leave us with cold rain..Still aways to go so who knows what the future holds..
It’s not even officially winter!
thanks Coffeelady, i look forward to reading your uplifting posts!
i’m with you- keep the faith. we’ll get a good snow or two this season. not based on models or trends or anything but that we’re due and it sure has started off pretty active.
and an amen on the cats!
So thankful that this system was a rain e event.. I pray the good lord keeps the snow north of kentucky. Please bring on mild warm winter.
Please take the bugs from the rest of us and make them a nice home at your place when spring and summer come along.
Thanks
Thats ok, the good lord and lowes will provide bug sprays. Lets all pray for warm winter.
Bite your tounge Barb! Lol
Barb you are a minority on this blog, so I would not expect much love coming your way! We get enought hot crap during the summer in KY, If you love the earth and want it to be healthy then hope for a nornal winter that produces snow!
Now, bring on the blizzards!
Why arw you attacking me, its, uncalked for
I believe someone might be trolling. Spell check helps also.
Nobody attacked you LoL
I am very new to the site but am already hooked!! And just for the record, I’m with the majority here- Bring on the snow!!!!
No one is attacking you Barb! You keep attacking snow lovers with your god loves warm weather comments!
Sorry if you miss understood my meaning!
Play nice. We are a democracy, and those who don’t want a lot of snow have a right to voice, just as those who want “giraffe” deep snow. Eye candy time. Not much candy; but this is Kentucky!

Rain
Thanks michael, very true. Attacking a person for not liking snow is just uncalled for.
I never attacked anyone.. Last time i checked this page isnt just, for snow lovers. Its a blog for all forms of weather. Just because its going rain all winter doesn’t give anyone the right to attack me for disliking brutal snowy winters.
You wasnt attacked just like you attacked no one
Get over your persecution complex. Seriously.
Where are all the snow showers and flurries Chris was showing earlier???
Just asking, don’t no one attack me 😉
Next weekend is a guess at best! LMK says anything from thunderstorms to snow may happen. Will the SE ridge rule again?
answer….yes, SE ridge will rule, just as it did practically the entire length of winter last year
I have lived in Lex or Lou since 95; and in my time here as a year round resident, I cannot recall many storms that weren’t a surprise. The ice storm of 09 is one that was actually forecast. We had a big snow in 96, 98, 04 (S. Indiana); and 07 that were somewhat of a surprise. Aside from these we had a few clippers that overachieved. Watch the models over the next week; and we shall see what happens. I don’t want any snow until Christmas Eve night for business and personal reasons; but Mother Nature never gets my memos. She does what she wants.
Most big storms in KY Re never forecast before hand, so I’m with you, lets hope for the best, we are way over due 🙂
ARE! Type O
