Good Monday, everybody. Some of you are seeing snow to start the new week… some of you are not seeing snow to start the new week. That pretty much sums up Kentucky weather right there. I’m tracking a fast moving system impacting the region today, and keeping a close eye on a potential wild setup for the weekend.
Today’s light snow band is mainly across the northern half of the state. This will have enough punch to put down some light accumulations and I covered all that in my last post. Here are some tracking toys for the flakes…

Current temperatures

I-75 @ Winchester Road
Lexington

I-75 @ Iron Works Pike
Lexington

US 60 @ US 127
Frankfort

I-71/I-75 at Buttermilk Pike
Near Covington

I-64 @ 3rd St. Exit
Louisville

Another weak system impacts parts of the region on Tuesday… this will mainly be in the far north and east. Shocked by that? Didn’t think so
Winds are going to crank up over the next several days. You wanna talk about a prolonged period of winds… we have mild and cold gusts on the way over the next week.
The mild blows our temps up to 60 ish by the end of the week. That’s when showers break out as a cold front drops in from the northwest. This front will get into the region and put the brakes on as areas of low pressure develop and move along it. That sounds eerily familiar to the pattern from a few weeks ago. You remember… the one that produced flooding rains, thunder, high winds, snow and ice?
Can we do it all over again? The setup is similar, but that doesn’t mean it will produce the exact same weather you had before… not at all! Here’s the look from late Friday through Sunday…
Most of what happens with this will depend on exactly where that front decides to hang out and which of those lows, if any, decide to become a big daddy.
This is a potent setup for a busy travel weekend. It’s one that can bring you heavy rain and thunder, wintry weather or a combination of the two. I lean toward a combo of the two.
I will update this potential around noon. Enjoy the day and take care.
“Wild” is the new “Mix”. We could at least paint our giant fence white 🙂
It will look like snow to the people flying across our great transitional state!
Same ol song and dance. Hope the cold air can work further to the south. Looks like the heavy stuff once again will miss us to the north by 50-100 miles. Do not like the possible ice setup. If the southeast ridge could just collapse a little bit we could be in the money. Of course are luck it will go completely away and these systems will head out to the east coast and miss us to the south. Should be another frustrating week of winter weather watching with a bunch of the same ol sing and dance. I’m Dreaming Of a White Christmas! Are you? Don’t get your hopes up!
I agree if that stationary fronts set up where Chris has it on his illustrations map 75 percent to a hundred percent will be rain for most of Kentucky. the fence will be I 74.
it always comes down 2 and over performing backside event.
Ever wanted a condensed look at some of the more popular modeled maps for a snowstorm in the Ohio Valley?
Although the information is technical, the maps help and can be used for comparative purposes.
I thought it was a good read….

Chris, what happened to all the talk about the brutal cold and huge snow chances for the week of Christmas through the first part of January? Has all that gone away or are we still on track for that?
The old timers say it warms up to snow. And that’s actually pretty accurate, since you need the southerly flow to provide moisture for a snowfall.
Chris shows a very cold area to our north for the weekend, which looks like it should eventually come on through here. Chris is just highlighting its arrival. We shall see…
I can’t really believe there was no mention to the temps this week …. Friday is supposed to be 60 and Saturday maybe will hit 70 ….. and look at next week …. 50’s all week, what happened to a major event talked up from 2 weeks ago, cold arctic air, snow, squalls, ummmmmmm not going to happen !!
Summerbreeze….Thanks for ending the hype early in the week. Now everyone can get prepared for flooding rains. GFS showing much warmer temps than a couple days ago. TRENDS say this will be cold rain for much of KY/Southern IN.
Put an Ark on your wish list may need it.
Kentucky weather is like Tony Romo!!! Looks great for a little bit! Only to let you down in the end….
I’m dreaming of a Rainyyy Christmas… Same ok song and dance rain/sleet mix again . Talked with my family who lives in Wisconsin , snow snow snow, every other day. Guess the only way I’ll see some snow for Christmas is when I go up there for the holidays( I’ll try to drag some of the cold air when I return and maybe we can have some snow too ) lol
The weekend system should be rain for the most of us unfortunately. Might get some flurries on the backside by next Monday but that’s about all. Nothing all that impressive unless you like rain :-(.
Nice little fluffy snow maker this morning. About an inch on the ground here outside of charleston and still snowing. I can’t believe it’s not rain.
Ok I’m probably grumpy from last nights loss…, but our weather stinks and I’m tired of hearing the word rain and wintry weather together. Just say snow for Nky and rain for the most of us! U combine them to give most of us on here glimmer of wintery hope ! It’s going to be rain for majority of us! Forecast the pattern is what I hear, and pattern will be nku north snow. Rest of us rain.
Models have backed off a bit on Arctic intrusion by Christmas, keeping bulk of coldest air just north
Taking into account just the raw numbers…high temps for Louisville
12/23 44-46 degrees
12/24 51-53
12/25 44-46
12/26 36-38
12/27 38-40
Yeah not awful promising for the snow lovers for the remainder of the year.
Forecast high of 68 balmy degrees for Sunday…lol..For some reason I see Bryant (aka BlowTorch) standing up in Canada with a flame thrower aimed at the lower 48..With a smile on his face..ughhh
haha yea next to his “Festivus” pole
Would upload the Famous song we all loved back the 70’s but don’t know how….Fits the weather perfect for Blowtorch lover’s…Without further ado the song is….”Burn Baby Burn” Disco Inferno by the Trammp’s..
