Good evening, folks. The wild weekend of weather continues to look a little on the nasty side. Buckle up for the ride that features a little bit of everything.
We have the heavy rain threat…
Throw the potential for thunderstorms and gusty winds into the mix and… wow.
Speaking of wow… temps will hit the 60s for many and a 70 is possible in the southeast. That all comes crashing down in just a few hours…
We go from 20-30 degrees above normal this weekend… to 10-20 degrees below normal early next week.
Check out the arctic shots lining up on the European Ensembles…
This is a heck of a pattern and a lot of extreme winter options are now on the table as we close out the month and roll into January.
Enjoy the evening and take care.
This is Bryant vs. the models. Just a few days of cold into January will make Bryant’s 57 degree high forecast for January not happen. Since we’ve had a fairly average December in regards to temps and precipitation so far–I will go with an average January. Sounds about right to me.
Has December really been average? I would have guessed slightly below average really. Had a very decent snow and it just seems colder by a little. Still, not a bad start to the winter weather except for all the mud. Now, today we had more rain (basically all day) and it was heavy at times. Seemed to just keep going straight across here on the radar.
It has been slightly below normal–but in the realm of what you might call average. I would say anything from 2 degrees below to 2 degrees above is fairly average for the winter.
thanks, Chris! appreciate the work very much.
hope this gets us a little snow anyway…
These temps could sure make for some very severe weather. Hope that does not pan out. Would like to see some snow on the back side but I am really just more concerned with the possibility for something bad near the holidays. Thanks for the update.
Have a Big Christmas party Saturday in central ky. Guessing wind, heavy rain, and 60s?
3 to 5 inches of rain will cause some problems for flood zones, lets hope some of that moisture can be kissed by a December wind a turned into Christmas snow, Lets go Frosty!
Did anybody see the storm that is supposed to hit Northern Ireland and Scotland on Christmas Day? Last word I saw said it could have category 4 hurricane force winds, but I’ve not seen an update in a day or so. That would probably be the total opposite of a white Christmas.
Hope springs eternal. I think of that phrase everytime CB mentions arctic air intrusions and possible storms1-2 weeks down the road. I know most of you take pleasure in bashing me, but ironically I’m not the one being rude or disrespectful. The very ones that criticize me are also the ones who bellyache when the warm air wins. You guys know who you are, Andy Rose and Prelude. The reason why guys like MJ and WxMan no longer post here is the ridicule and scorn that comes if you dare disagree with CB. Ironically, I love winter. I want to be buried in snow. I grew up with the 77-78 winter, seen my first thunder snow in 1994, backpacked in the Red River Gorge during the 96 storm. Even at the ripe old age of 42, I get a child like thrill when it snows enough to take the kids sledding. But, I’ve seen promises and rumors of winter for the past 7-8 years, each time to realize that something fundamental has changed with the climate. I basically have resigned myself to this is the way KY winters are. So bash away. My 57 prediction is crazy to most of you? But is my prediction of a largely snowless January? We will see
WxMan was banned he had no choice in whether he posts here or not so don’t’ get it twisted.
As long as a popularly discredited model doesn’t start being the most consistent model 24-36 hours out, and Bryant doesn’t annoy everyone by repeatedly pointing out that fact, he’ll be just fine and will avoid such a fate as those in the past. 😉
I like reading your thought’s Bryant..Make’s for a good laugh when the weather is boring..But in all honesty when you predict a average of 57 degree’s in Jan. that is over doing it..Don’t care how bad thing’s look in the long range but to me there’s no way in God’s green earth we will average 57 degree’s..Sure we may torch a few days but climo says there no way we average that kind of high in Jan..
Don’t feed the trolls and they eventually go away.
Somewhere in the wreckage of that thinking there is actually a trace of logic………
That being said, you can never be sure what will happen. Just because the past decade plus have had a lack of big snows, doesn’t mean that will continue forever……
I mean, if something is on a trend, it’s almost as if you’re intimating that that trend can NEVER be broken, EVER!
I have no problems with your post, its your opinion.
I believe nothing dramatic it’s going to happen it is just going to be your average winter.
Someone might want to look this one up, but the EPIC late 70s winters we had I’m pretty sure few if any of those had White Christmases, I may be wrong but in the Frankfort area the harsh periods were after the holidays??
Looks like we’ll at least have Christmas like temps during the holiday and maybe a little fun and games for later in the week. A bit concerned with what such a contrast of temps can bring. Bringing in the new year with a blizzard would be fun. Enjoy the slow weather week, everyone.
Plus before the 1977-78 winter the winters before that all the way back to 1963 weren’t that oustanding. Jan 1963 brought -30’s temps and the old -34 state record from Bonnieville that lasted until January 1994 until Shelbyville recorded that awesome -37F. That morning, about 20 miles south of there in rural northeastern Nelson County I personally witnessed our outdoor themometer with the mercury shrunk down to the actual bulb.
We go through cycles of warmer periods, and colder periods. Nothing will be locked in forever, and we are no where near as a species advanced enough to know what will be happening years in advance, much less several months out.
The winter of 97/1998 was a BLOWTORCH winter (excuse the expression)
But the fluke 20 plus inch dusting in Early February that year made it very memorable, so never say never, anything can happen year to year!
Yea , I mentioned this a few posts ago……
but that was a FREAK RARE storm too.
But that entire winter (other than that) was pretty calm , warm and boring.
In Addition to that, when I was living in Western NC in March ’93, not sure what the 92/93 winter was like in the metro, but that entire winter was AWFUL (for the western NC area) all the way up until that March storm, then the bottom fell out…I think Brevard received 20 inches from that storm, which was about the same as the 98 storm here in Lexington.
I guess why that’s why those two storms are so similar (for me)
Weather seems to run in long cycles….Like 20 to 50 year cycles….We are now entering a colder than normal cycle over the next few decades. Earth will start cooling and we will see colder winters in some parts of the world. Heck look what is going on over in the middle east. Can’t ever remember snow over there. Seems other continents are stealing our thunder. No pun intended. Cold air is suppose to move in here over the next few weeks. This will set the stage for some wild winter weather in our neck of the woods……I HOPE!!!!
I agree, just to throw you guys something to ponder about global warming, if all the Ice caps melt, more fresh un salted water comes into play! Guess what freezes quicker, salt water or fresh water!
Ice age Baby!
