Good Sunday evening. Our arctic front continues to push eastward across the state this evening and will bring a period of light snow and flurries overnight into early Monday. This sets the stage for the beginning of a hyper-active winter period for us and much of the country.
I’ve touched on the system coming in Wednesday night into Thursday. I have no changes to the thoughts on how that plays out and we will answer questions with that system as we get closer.
I continue to watch in amazement at what the models are showing moving in behind it for late next weekend into the following week. I have never witnessed a computer model show temperatures of 50 degrees below normal… until now…
That is just absurd to see. Will that even come close to verifying? We will have to wait and see… but EVERY model is now locked into a major arctic outbreak during the same time.
The GFS was the last holdout and is likely why you are reading all these “warmer” forecasts I see you guys posting about. There are certain outlets/agencies that will spit out exactly what that model says and never think twice about it. I wonder what they will say now that the model has joined all the other models for next weekend…
See the arctic outbreak coming in behind it? Yep… the GFS is also forecasting temps around here to go below 0 during the same time as the European model I showed in my earlier post. Does it mean they are right? Of course not… but they are running straight toward the January pattern I’ve been talking about since I put out the winter forecast in early November.
I’m feeling a little salty tonight, so I had better end it here. 🙂
Enjoy the evening and take care.
preach it brother!
Thank you for all you do Chris!
We are thankful for you and your hard work!!
If nothing else that is a good looking model. Thanks Chris for the update. I used to live in NW Ohio and have relatives that live there. If that worked out they will really like it I am sure.
So there are two steps to the cold drop? One for this week and another lower step around the weekend? Seems that would push out any chances of significant snow, so the big topic would be Cold and not Snow.
All of our previous mega cold events I recall in the past 20 years were preceded by significant snow events. Snow pack and clear skies at night. Are into new territory of the bitter sustained cold with little to no snow?
I don’t know, but seems that is the general summary.
Well just to clarify, the GFS is showing a snowstorm around here preceding the snow, and the Euro is showing a decent advisory event for thursday.
Hey Matt,
What have the recent models been saying about the snow late week? Thanks
The GFS isnt showing much for thursday but is showing a decent event this coming weekend followed by extreme cold. Don’t get your hopes up on the snow as it has only just started to show, but if the GFS becomes consistent that would up our chances. The Cold part has been showing up for a couple days and has numerous models in on the idea. The pattern is heading toward extreme cold, as Chris stated in his winter forecast.
Thanks!
Not seeing it without a significant snowpack, but referring to sub zero temps and not wind chill numbers.
Looking better and better for an extended break into next week!! Woo Hoo! Keep the updates coming!
Get’em you salty dog…Will have to admit i was doubting the cold air myself..Well not the cold air just some moisture to go with it..Anyways thxs Chris for the blog and have a happy New Year..
Thanks Chris.I don’t know if we will see snow but looks like we will see some serious cold. Thanks for the heads up.
That’s some serious “brrrrrr” on the way! Break out the long underwear and keep the updates coming. I really enjoy reading your updates throughout the day!
The weather channel has us around 50 this wedensday and next week.
They must stand firm on GFS and nothing else.
Temp down from 45 to 35 in the past hour here in Lawrenceburg. Coldest I’ve seen since I’ve moved in this house (Dec 2009) is -3. With those maps Chris posted looks like the potential is there to go close to -10. Last time Central Kentucky hit -10 was February of 1996.
Thanks, Chris, for all the great weather info today and a great weather resource to follow during the cold and snow to come!
here’s hoping we can get some good moisture to go along with those temps!
Thanks Chris! This is my go to weather site/blog I appreciate your hard work!
Thanks Chris! the heads-up for next week is noted!
