Update

Good morning… again. I have to learn to stop posting before the European Model rolls in. The newest run shows a much stronger system on Thursday…

EuroThat would certainly amount to a greater potential for accumulating snow and would go against my thoughts from below. Take care.

Previous Update posted 30 minutes before the one above

Good Monday, everyone. Cold air has arrived right on cue as we get ready to say goodbye to 2013. Hard to believe a new year is just hour away. The start of that new year continues to have a very wintry look for the month of January. I highly doubt we get to the end of the month with too many complaints from the winter weather fans. Oh wait.. I forgot my audience. I kid, I kid… kinda. 😉

Leftover snow flurries and light snow showers will be around early today as a cold northwesterly wind blows. Temps in the upper 20s will be common across much of central and northern parts of the state. Low 30s in the west and south.

All eyes are on the fast moving system that works in here Wednesday night and Thursday. This system is a “digger” and that means gusty winds will blow temps toward 40 ahead of it on Wednesday. As the low digs in from the west… temps crash Wednesday night and Thursday’s highs will come during the wee hours of the morning.

Thermometers will go from the low 30s before daybreak to the upper teens by early evening. Wind gusts of 30mph will make it feel closer to 0 at times late in the day. Friday will feature lows of 10-15 with highs in the low to middle 20s.

What about the snow with this system? Most of the moisture for us is located behind the low and that means a period of snow early Thursday with snow showers and squalls taking over in the afternoon and evening hours. Check out the NAM simulated radar for Thursday morning…

The GFS is still a little dry for my taste, but it’s finally getting the overall theme right…

Again… this is not going to be some big time snow maker around here. But, it should be able to put down some accumulations across the region. An inch or two at most, right now. Throw that into the mix with the cold temps and gusty winds and you have some nasty.

The next arctic front surging into the country over the weekend will arrive on Sunday and this will unleash the beast! All indications point toward a headline making arctic outbreak for much of the country next week. With blocking finally showing up and the Pacific signals still giving us the same cold look… watch out. The cold can become brutal and may try to settle in for a while.

Odds also favor some kind of storm system rolling northeastward along the arctic front on Sunday and Monday. Arctic outbreaks are often accompanied by snow makers and every model has had runs showing that. The Canadian model…Canadian 2I will have updates coming your way later on. Make it a great Monday and take care.
