Update
Good morning… again. I have to learn to stop posting before the European Model rolls in. The newest run shows a much stronger system on Thursday…
That would certainly amount to a greater potential for accumulating snow and would go against my thoughts from below. Take care.
Previous Update posted 30 minutes before the one above
Good Monday, everyone. Cold air has arrived right on cue as we get ready to say goodbye to 2013. Hard to believe a new year is just hour away. The start of that new year continues to have a very wintry look for the month of January. I highly doubt we get to the end of the month with too many complaints from the winter weather fans. Oh wait.. I forgot my audience. I kid, I kid… kinda. 😉
Leftover snow flurries and light snow showers will be around early today as a cold northwesterly wind blows. Temps in the upper 20s will be common across much of central and northern parts of the state. Low 30s in the west and south.
All eyes are on the fast moving system that works in here Wednesday night and Thursday. This system is a “digger” and that means gusty winds will blow temps toward 40 ahead of it on Wednesday. As the low digs in from the west… temps crash Wednesday night and Thursday’s highs will come during the wee hours of the morning.
Thermometers will go from the low 30s before daybreak to the upper teens by early evening. Wind gusts of 30mph will make it feel closer to 0 at times late in the day. Friday will feature lows of 10-15 with highs in the low to middle 20s.
What about the snow with this system? Most of the moisture for us is located behind the low and that means a period of snow early Thursday with snow showers and squalls taking over in the afternoon and evening hours. Check out the NAM simulated radar for Thursday morning…
The GFS is still a little dry for my taste, but it’s finally getting the overall theme right…
Again… this is not going to be some big time snow maker around here. But, it should be able to put down some accumulations across the region. An inch or two at most, right now. Throw that into the mix with the cold temps and gusty winds and you have some nasty.
The next arctic front surging into the country over the weekend will arrive on Sunday and this will unleash the beast! All indications point toward a headline making arctic outbreak for much of the country next week. With blocking finally showing up and the Pacific signals still giving us the same cold look… watch out. The cold can become brutal and may try to settle in for a while.
Odds also favor some kind of storm system rolling northeastward along the arctic front on Sunday and Monday. Arctic outbreaks are often accompanied by snow makers and every model has had runs showing that. The Canadian model…I will have updates coming your way later on. Make it a great Monday and take care.
I can handle the cold, but the wind factored in makes me a big wimp. In spite of the cold, my pooches still insist on a nightly walk.
We will “trade” the possible ankle biters in January with one good snow. Nothing too lofty, but dare the total to bust 6″ with one event rather than several possible ABs?
My four tiny poodles don’t do cold or wind. PoochPads to the rescue. 🙂
That would be nice. Ours do not like too much wind when cold, so they do have some limits. 🙂
You’ve got a snow lover audience member in me Chris! You can always count on that! 🙂
Looks like a lot of fun stuff to track over the next several days. Let’s get this party started!!
Thanks for the double update. I too am a huge snow lover. Even though I have to get out and work in it I still would like to see a couple mice snow storms a season. My theory is if it is going to be cold, let it snow. I hate a sunny cold day. Looks like we just might be in to something with the latest Euro for the Thursday system not sure that I trust the Canadian this far out on the Sunday/Monday system, but that would surely keep the kiddos out of school for a couple more days. Not getting my hopes up just yet.
“Nice”. I guess a mice snow would be equal to BubbaG’s ankle biters. Lol
Yep, about the same size. Pre 98 we tended to get a few bigger snows and not a lot of mice high snows. I think our area has not got 10″ snow total in the past two winters plus this current month. Even my most cynical view would not have come up with that.
We have a nice frozen deck to slide around on this morning. Hope this is a very subtle sign of things to come 🙂 Have a great day everyone!
Definitely a snowlover here. Just like someone said a couple of days ago,I would love to have a reason, besides hunger of course, to go to Kroger. I once again am getting excited about the prospects of some big snows and cold. Thanks CB for all you do. Coffeelady,if your out there, just checking to see if you’re OK? Haven’t heard from you in a while. I really miss your positivity.
Temp is 30 this morning and it is cloudy and breezy. I am looking forward to the first snow fall then bring Spring on. I am one and done. Have a Great day.
Chris, please tell Wynter that she is just fabulous on the WKYT holiday commercial. She has your happy vibe.
Let the WILD rumpus BEGIN!!! and I wouldn’t mind if it hung around for awhile, either.
latest run of the GFS is coming around to supporting what the Euro is showing for this Thursday…the storm is digging much further south…could get interesting, especially for Eastern Ky….the NAM is also getting close to agreeing with both as well…
Yep..Showing a nice little event..Now if they will just practice what they preach..lol
agree 100% lol
This is the type of post that makes the comments section so valuable. Someone to digest the models in between posts from Chris. Thanks!
No ankle biters this year, just toe nail biters.
There are people that do that. Usually girls. Eww!
It’s cold up here in Chicagoland! Even the locals are talking about the cold spell setting in up here! The non-forecasted freezing drizzle/rain event turned into an overachieving 1″ snow last night! The local mets are talking about how far south this stuff is going to push into the nation… let’s just say that they must be on the phone with Mr. Bailey!
I don’t buy the 12z gfs solution. The model is just reverting to its low pressure southeastern biases.
WOW, thats probably the craziest run of the Euro I’ve ever seen! It has us here in Lexington next Sun and Mon “highs” in the negatives and lows reaching 27 BELOW ZERO under a heavy deep snowpack of a foot or two!!!! It shows a monster snowstorm after the thursday one. That run must’ve lost its mind, I mean of course none of that is going to happen.
That was forecast this far out and actually happened in 93. Was negative double digits at night, and even negative during the day. Not -27 though.
I think it did get to -22 or -23 here in the Louisville area! Brrr…If these storms and cold pan out, we are all in for a shock!!! 🙂
