Good Friday everyone. Our weekend is kicking off on a very windy note as much colder air blast in from the northwest today. Winds are going to gust close to 30mph today and that action may hang tough into Saturday. It’s part of a busy weather pattern that takes on a winter look for the middle of next week.

In addition to the winds of today… a mix of sun and clouds will be noted and a leftover shower or two will be possible. The best chance of seeing a shower will be in the north and east and may come in the afternoon. Temps today are going to range from near 60 in the north and northeast to mid 60s in the south with higher readings out west.

Track it all right here…

Current Temps

Skies will clear out overnight as temps dive close to 40 to start our Saturday. Partly to mostly sunny skies return as readings remain on the cool side. Highs from 60-65 should be noted for many. In some cases… Saturday will be cooler than today. Winds will continue to be very gusty.

Sunday looks like the pick day of the week with highs in the low 70s with a few high clouds increasing by the end of the day. Those clouds are in response to a weak front that dips southward into the region. This shows up very well on the European Model…

We are likely to see a sharp temp gradient from north to south with a boundary like that. How sharp remains to be seen as it depends on how far south the front can make it. There is the chance for a few showers Sunday night into Monday with the best shot in the north.

That brings us to the winter looking setup for the remainder of next week. A powerhouse low will crank in the western Ohio Valley on Tuesday and race into the Great Lakes. Showers and thunderstorms will develop along the cold front that swings in here from the west. Winds may be an issue with this setup and will be something for us to watch.

Very cold air then surges in from west to east behind this front. Temps will reach their peak early Tuesday before crashing into the 40s by the end of the day from west to east. I like the transition shown on the Euro…

High temps for Wednesday and Thursday will be way down. Some upslope flow clouds and showers will be possible Wednesday and the higher elevations of the Appalachian Mountains are in line for some wet snows. This should be at a lower elevation than the system earlier this month and we will see if this can reach into some of the southeastern Ky mountains. It wouldn’ take much colder air to talk about a flake mixing in anywhere.

Some areas during this time should be able to only reach the upper 40s for highs. Nighttime lows will hit the 30s by Wednesday morning and a hard frost or freeze possible by Thursday and Friday.

The long range GFS suggests the colder than normal pattern is trying to lock in for the remainder of October…

I will have updates through the weekend, so check back. Have a great Friday and take care.
