Good evening, all. The band of snow across central and eastern Kentucky this evening has been rather impressive… on radar. It was snowing hard overtop of us, but very little was actually making it to the ground. Thanks, dry air!
Parts of northern Kentucky did get the snow to the ground and several areas picked up around one inch. For the rest of us, not so much. That said… additional bands of light snow will work across the state overnight and will put down light accumulations. These will put down lots of coatings with a few spots possibly squeezing out an inch. The forecast for these areas was for up to an inch, so that’s not a real surprise.
Let’s get back to tracking whatever else is out there…

I am wondering about temps. Seems that the mesonet is showing increased temps. Here the temp has went up and no snow yet. Radar, as you said, was impressive over us all afternoon. Thinking this would have been real nice without the dry are. Wondering about next week/weekend and the week after. Hope things work out good for snow lovers as there is still time left this winter.
Not complaining, but just asking a weather question, why would the models not pick up on the dry air in place that most mets based their forecast on! Seems the models are still a joke in this part of the world in the winter??
Chris you gotta tough job!
“Chris you gotta tough job!”
Yes he does. And that is why I am so impressed with how well he does. Easily the best, imo.
Nothing like a virga storm to depress a snow lover’s mood. Chris, can you post about rumors of the southern stream getting involved next weekend and beyond?
Yep. Nothing like the 7 day away storm to get our hopes up and for the excitement to build and then nothing.
Out of the entire day, only a few flakes of snow have successfully struggled against the bone dry air to make it to the ground here in eastern Louisville. I almost feel sorry for them.
Yes… it is a bit sad thinking of them on the journey to their destiny… much like the newly hatched sea turtle as it tirelessly makes it’s journey to the sea… the gulls and crabs waiting to gobble them up much like the dry air does the snow flake… so the evolution continues, time and time again…
Great imagery! We need to write some weather haiku 🙂
Sounds like fun to me! 😉
ended up with a dusting this eve, and then the snow is gone! 🙁 maybe we will get in on some of the snow bands thru the night!
visiting friends in Goshen, IN tonight. About 10 inches on the ground already when we got here last night and we got about 3-4 more today. So happy to get to see it. Sure would love to see some in Kentucky though.
Might as well post some pics? Lets see it??
But seeing other people’s snow is like kissing your sister!
Sounds good, but its not that impressive 😉
doesnt even sound good.
Can’t win
I have a proposal, any low depression that travels through the state and is able put down an inch of snow or more deserves 2 be named, just like I a hurricane.
Umph. Looks like the RAP short term model might just pull this one off. Earlier today, it showed very little snow accumulation for Louisville, perhaps a dusting to a 0.1″. It even spelled out precipitation after 10pm, which did not look likely while we were experiencing a virga storm for several hours. If we get any additional snow showers overnight, there could be a little more accumulation.
Bummer. I’m still holding out for a decent snow here in Richmond. Just 2″ or more is all I ask!
Ok folks, look at the radar right NOW, the DOME is showing Off!
Sitting here waiting for the typical smart-alecky “I told you so” comments to commence.
I have been waiting for one of your “Eeyore” posts all day. You never disappoint.
That is immaterial to the conversation. Please stay on topic. 🙂
0 for Richmond this week. 1.5″ for the year.
Louisville, Northern Ky, London, Frankfort… I have seen snow in all of them but none at all in Richmond. Crazy. I have added to my list of
1. Don’t trust the models
2. Fear the trend
3. Respect and appreciate Chris
a # 4. Believe what you see out your window and not the radar
Meteorological winter is more then half over and we are still well below snowfall average. But for the most part most of our bigger snows occurred the second half and the first few weeks of June , so don’t give up hope yet folks keep doing the snow dance!
Oops make that February
But if we can get some additional snow in June, I’m in!
Thankful for the dry air 🙂 Come on spring!!!
I bet you are, lol
Jeff, I am.. I live on a mountain top in Eastern Ky. Snow makes my road off the mountain horrible. Just thankful, I’ll be able to attend church tomorrow and maybe a little mall shopping.. 🙂
Reminds me of the time in 2010 when I was working for Rural Metro of Lexington. A winter storm was coming in this one night and me and my coworker were sent to transport a man back to his home all the way down just outside of Whitesburg. Snow had started falling on the way out of the metro area but the roads were still clear.
The washer fluid in the ambulance froze before we got to Campton so I had to pull off at a gas station to try and clean the windshield or else we would never have made it. As I lifted one of the wiper blades, it broke off so I had to wrap a towel around the wiper arm. The other one was ok and we eventually got back on the road.
We arrived at this man’s house and the road was still clear, but the snow was getting somewhat heavier. In the course of the next 10-15 minutes while we were inside helping the patient into his bed and talking to his family, everything outside had turned white and the roads were getting slick. It took us 4 1/2 hours to make it back to Lexington but we made it safe and sound.
So trust me I understand in some small way.
I’m thinking that it’s time the NWS drops the WWA.
Is this a Cindy Preszler forecast. LOL
Lets have an early spring!!!!
Has anyone noticed the batch of showers of ____ to our west of Lexington? Not sure what type of precip. it is but if its rain, its moderate but if thats snow, it must be heavy. Temps are above freezing across most of ky, this was definitely not in the forecast. Pray people, this is our only hope of snow for folks in Lex and west.
hi Cindy
K – I’m thoroughly confused!
I understand dry air overwhelmed the impressive radar this afternoon…..So if this is the case, why didn’t areas farther north have this problem? I mean, they are even FARTHER away from the gulf…..I saw a tweet about roads near Lafayette…..Just curious. Not being negative, just inquisitive..
Temps up to 40 in knott co
Cindy Presler, haha Remember Tom Sater, he was the dusting and we got 8 inches. Its hard to forecast winter weather folks, just remember that, being a met. in Florida and GA as I was I rarely had to but it did happen sometimes, mainly ice for us. So give CB a break, the harsh comments need to stop. Enjoy the blog discuss and comments should stay positive. Come on.
