Good Monday everyone and welcome to a brand new weather game. The torrid temp pattern we have been in for months has FINALLY been knocked out as a real deal fall pattern takes charge. This pattern is being ushered in by some rains today into Tuesday and some areas could get in on a nice soaker. We take a look at that and even throw in a few words about snow. ![]()
I mentioned over the weekend that this current setup is like a true winter storm. As with any storm like this… track is all important in determining how much rain your backyard gets. Central and eastern Kentucky stand to get the most rain and totals of great than an inch are likely for some areas. Our friends in the western half of the state wil see much lighter totals. You can track the rains here…
Temps the next few days will be nothing short of chilly for areas under clouds and rain. Highs can stay in the 50s for those areas!
The rains slowly begin to pull away later Tuesday into Tuesday night. This will set the stage for some decent weather coming up for the middle and end of the week as temps work back toward the 70s for highs for a couple of days. We will need to really keep an eye on what is going on across the southeastern states as another big low will try to crank up and work northward. This is likely to have tropical origins and will be moisture loaded and could come a bit farther west than the models are showing. If it does… rains could once again push back in here… especially in the east.
As that low moves offshore and up the east coast… the coldest air in a long time will dive southward into much of the eastern half of the country. Here’s the deal… if skies are clear next weekend into early the following week… an early season frost is not out of the question. Here is the European Model showing the big push of cold air on Sunday…

That is something to watch for as that chilly air means business. The tropics will need to be watched as well as something really getting together and coming out of the Gulf or Caribbean could play a factor in how all this plays out.
The GFS ensembles strongly agrees with this colder than normal pattern setting up shop and really settling in this weekend. Here is the temp departure centered on this coming Sunday…

If you want to look a little farther down the road into next week… the map doesn’t really change very much at all. This is centered on Thursday, October 7th…

If you want to talk about a total and abrupt pattern change… this is a textbook case as we go from record setting heat to well below normal temps in just a matter of a few days.
I have talked a lot over the past month about the colder than normal temps across much of Canada and that has extended across the pole into the other side of our globe. This has caused some early season snows in those areas and snowcover is now considered to be above normal as you can see on this map…

Again… if you are a fan of winter weather… you have got to like the early season buildup of snow across the northern hemisphere. Have a great Monday and take care.

Yes Chris, the eastern half of Canada does have nice snow pak already but the western half of the country looks like an awful heat dome building up. The fact that the warmth is that far north is concerning. The ole global warming….bla bla.
Yeah I was noticing that the GFS is pretty gung-ho about dropping a nice patch of cold air in here about 7 days from now. Looks like upper 30s are a real possibility, especially for eastern KY next week. Man.. what a WILD year. From record cold, to record heat, and possibly back to cold again.
Will that heat out west zone out, or come barreling this way?
a steady COLD RAIN has been falling all morning here in knox co. with temps. in mid to upper 50’s!!!! I had to dig a coat outta the closet…LOL…this weather is getting me ready to see those snowflakes flying!!!
hmmm…. signs pointing to a HUGE INDIAN SUMMER SPELL after the COLD shot next week…Figures…lol…back to unseasonably warm temps.? I HOPE NOT!
Chris, why is it that we always seem to go from winter to summer with very little spring, and then from summer to late fall/early winter weather? Not much, sutumn…just wondering.
58 degrees here is as high as it has been today so far….clouds and some light rains.
Very Little (Drizzle) if any rain in versailles as of 1:30
Nothing but damp drizzle all day here. Hoping this evening holds more promise for real rain.
I’ve been unde steady rains all day here. if this would have been snow it would have been a narrow band (according to radar) streaming north all day long pretty much over the same area along the I-75 corridor area…
according to my thermometer here in covington we topped off at 58 today and it was a raw 58 at that. I cooler and wetter pattern needs to hold into early december and then we are in business 😀
What a crazy few days! From mid 90’s on Friday to mid 50’s today, a full 40 degree drop in highs!
Chris,
I saw the word snow and almost had a heart attack. Don’t do me that way. 🙂
Cold, cloudy, foggy with rain still falling here in knox co. we’ve had .43″ today. it truly looks like a cold, winters day out there…ahhhh snowflakes are dancing in my head…LOL…
It’s been cloudy and cool with a few showers today, but if this was the drought busting rain that was forecasted, the forecast was wrong.
3/100’s of an inch of rain today? R u kidding? I knew the models were too wet (for us) but I was expecting at least a quarter of an inch. Oh well…..
Total rain so far in eastern Fleming Co since Friday is .70 inches…. .20 friday night, and .50 today.
What happened to all the rain 🙁
