Good Thursday to one and all and welcome to scorching hot first day of fall! The past few days have featured temps well into the 90s for much of the state and today may offer up the hottest temps yet. Just how high will the thermometers go today? Well… that will be answered shortly. Speaking of shortly… it won’t be too much longer before we see a MAJOR pattern change take place that will lead to some cool and damp weather. Yes… you are hearing me right on that. ![]()
Louisville continues to lead the charge with the heat… just as it has done all summer long. The high Wednesday hit 99 degrees breaking yet another record. 98 Tuesday… 99 Wednesday… how about 100 degrees today? That is a strong possibility. Most areas will be in the low and middle 90s under mostly sunny skies. I would not be surprised to see areas across the Lexington and Frankfort areas reach the upper 90s. WOW!! Hottest first day of fall ever? Very likely as records once again may be set.

Current Temps

Today’s Highs

Friday will be another hot one as temps return to the lower 90s for most areas. Winds will again crank up ahead of a cold front that blows into town Friday evening into the overnight. This will bring a broken band of showers and thunderstorms that may threaten a few high school football games.
Temps will come WAY down once the front moves in and out and you can see that here on the NAM…

Temps Saturday will range from the 70s across central and eastern Kentucky to the lower 80s in the west. Skies will be partly cloudy and this should be another windy day. There will be the threat for a scattered shower or thunderstorm.. but much of the day should be dry.
Sunday will see another system diving in from the northwest. This will develop into a cut off low pressure that takes up residence across the region into the middle of next week. Showers and some thunderstorms will increase later Sunday as a moist southwesterly flow sets up just ahead of this low. Highs will be in the 70s once again.
This low will work slowly eastward across the Ohio Valley resulting in more rain chances and much cooler air moving in. This is a great shot for us to make up on some ground on the rainfall shortage of the past few months. Temps during this time will come way down with highs in the 60s very possible for a few days.
Next week looks cooler and wetter overall and no one should be complaining about that. We will also keep an eye on something we have harped on for a few weeks now… a wild looking weather map to end September on. The models continue to advertise something tropical coming out of the Caribbean and then riding up the east coast as some chilly air from Canada dives in on the backside. We shall see.
Have a great Thursday and take care.
I won’t complain about cooler but I do not want a flood.
How cold are we talking….like fall chilly cold or snow cold with all of that moisture to work with???? I know probably wishful thinking but its never too early to see some flakes flying….are you with me lol?
According to NWS records Louisville has hit 99 later in the season than this.
Septmeber 29, 1953–99.
But not 100
For Lexington?
That same date…September 29, 1953–97.
Seems like that was an extreme day of heat.
It was 99 in Evansville, IN
98 in Bowling Green
98 in Nashville.
TD 15 has formed in the SW Caribbean. Will be “Matthew” before the day is over. This one looks to eventually move into the GOM. Going to be trouble for someone.
I am ready for the coming rain. I don’t care if it rains all day long as long as it is a gentle, slow rain. Maybe this Matthew will be the “something tropical” that Chris is talking about? Hope so–we need it badly.
Boy, it sure is cold in Paintsville. Current temps are showing -238. Paintsville’s frozen solid.
Troll.
