Good Wednesdsay everyone. We are in the middle of one heck of a heat wave across the state as records are falling and will likely continue to fall in the coming days. There is some good news on the horizon as an honest to goodness cool and damp pattern appears to be in the works for this weekend into early next week.
Louisville set another record high Tuesday as the thermometer hit an amazing 98 degrees. This is the hottest temp ever recorded this late in the season for the Derby City. The dry ground around here is really doing a number on temps and adding an additional 7 or 8 degrees to what this air mass would normally produce. All of the energy from the sun is going directly into heating up the air and that is a trend we have to respect through Friday. Readings today will be back into the 90s for most of the area. The threat for scattered showers and thunderstorms will have something to say about that in a few spots.
You can track today’s heat numbers here…

Today’s Highs

As mentioned… showers and thunderstorms will be scattered about the area today and these will contain locally heavy rains for areas that get in on the action. Again… scattered is the word for the day and you can see that on radar…
Here is hoping you get to hear the drips and drops of some of those showers and storms today. ![]()
The heat isn’t done with us yet as the first few days of fall will once again bake us. Highs will be well into the 90s Thursday and Friday and more records will be in jeopardy.
The big change comes this weekend and it is honestly going to be a dramatic one. A cold front works in here later Friday with a line of showers and thunderstorms into early Saturday. Cooler air moves in with highs Saturday in the 70s. Low pressure will then dive in from the northwest into Sunday with an increase in showers and some thunderstorms. This happens as low pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere cuts off from the main flow across the Ohio Valley. It is this pattern that can lead to repeat rains into early next week as some VERY cool air dumbbells in from the northwest.
The European Model is once again leading the way with this…

The GFS is showing something similar… but it is in its “heck if I know” stages as it varies from run to run on where to place the cutoff low. Regardless… this is a cool and damp pattern that is likely to settle in here over the weekend into early next week. If this one somehow manages to miss us with the decent rains… it might be a VERY long fall around here!
For those who watched me for years on WKYT in Lexington… does this pic bring back some memories?
It was good catching up with my old peeps Yesterday. ![]()

Great photo! We all miss you so much. I do like the way Todd lets out a big sigh before delivering bad news, though. As in, “Still no rain. Still hot.” Ugh, it’s an ugly Bluegrass for the WEG visitors.
These storms have some wicked thunder and lightning..
Torrential rain, thunder/lightning was the alarm clock here in southeast ky.this morning…:) had almost .50″ of rain.
as for the above pic. well in my opinion that was the best on screen news/weather Trio ever!!!!
Why is there rain all the way down into western NC? I thought the front was stalling out well north of here
Wow! Quite an artic outbreak in eastern kentucky. According to ky mesonet it’s -247 degrees in Johnson county lol:
This,http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/psd/people/klaus.wolter/MEI/#discussion says we are going to keep a strong La Nina into 2011 and and some form of La Nina into winter 2011-2012.
This La Nina isn’t what is keeping it so hot and dry this year, is it?

In Indiana, it has not rained to any amount in several weeks. It has cooled off a bunch, but we cannot even use our grills in my county.
