Good evening, gang. Here’s hoping things are going great in your life. I wanted to drop by for a couple of quick thoughts on where we go from here. My weekend thoughts haven’t changed… rounds of light snow that should be able to put down some light accumulations.
The longer range for next week has a lot for us to watch. The southern branch of the jet stream is coming alive with energy and we have many systems rolling in. The models will have a tough time figuring all this out… especially the GFS. That’s a model that will be overpowered by the southern branch for a while.
The higher resolution European Model is likely to have a better handle on things. Better does not mean perfect, though. The Euro continues to show a sizable storm coming from the Gulf of Mexico and up the east coast from late Tuesday through Thursday…
We will see how this goes… but you simply cannot write off any of these systems over the next few weeks.
See you later tonight. Take care.
Deep Thoughts….With Chris Bailey!
Thanks CB.
maybe the low riding the gUlf will be an overachiever. and all of Southeast
Kentucky will receive snow.
and we will name it Andy
Also I will be complaining that Louisville never gets a big time snow.
I second the motion!
As always Cb, thanks for the possible heads up next week.
Thanks so much, Chris! I know you have been in overdrive with one system after another.
Personally I will be glad when we see the last snowflake and last of the freezing temperatures.
Thanks for all you do CB! Enjoying this crazy winter weather here!
thank you Chris. I hope you get some r & r soon. take care….
Would love for one of these southern storms to lay down a whammy SNOW, especially for our good folks in the snow deprived sections!
Thanks a ton Chris!
Lexington is slowly and steadily making a run on a decent snow season. 14.6 inches now for meterological winter and 16.0 for the snow season. That 14.6 is still well behind 2010 and 2011.
The south of Lexington says, “meh”. With an extra sprinkle of meh on top 🙂
I did say we were behind 2010 and 2011:) I think 2010-2011 was much worse than this winter in the Lexington metro. Over a foot of snow in December and then close to 10 inches in both January and February.
That was our year of the ankle biters. I remember it well. We have had three snows above 4″ in the past 16 years. Crazy but true. I have thousands of witnesses to affirm what I say is accurate.
Again, since we missed a big ice storm by a few degrees, we could have had it MUCH worse. A big win missing ice. That said, we still have more winter and I will bet every time on big ice over big snow.
Tito, throw me a tissue!
Four actually, since need to count the two four inch events we had just before the mini arctic outbreak the other week. Two dry snow events combined to result in one and two foot drifts, but was a 24 hour wonder melted by nearly 60 degrees the next day.
The winter that WON’T quit! I’m loving it!
Cold + southern stream = CHANCES!
For ice 😉 ….. 🙁
Sorry I’m greedy about my snow. Hoping the storm shifts more north and puts Louisville in the sweet spot.
I have always heard SEKY gets smacked with snow if the storm comes out of the Gulf of Mexico. Is this true?
No
Sure it is, the big snows of the 90’s were a direct result of a low coming from the gulf and usually fazing with a low from the north, the big one being Superstorm in 93
Its possible but does not always happen in fact for the last while it brings to much warm air and we get cold rain
Agreed about lately bringing to much warm air but if cold air wins out thats when the BIG ONE happens.
And or ice.
And the 70s and 80s. The 00s and 10s are a new generation for us. One of reflection on what was, in the big snow days of lore.
In fact, it is “about” the only way we get a big snow, but “Big” rarely happens, In the last 14 years, we had one 8″ snow in December out of the gulf here in Middlesboro 4 years ago. Other than that one, we haven’t had a single snowfall over 4.5″ in the same time span.
I have missed reading this Blog and all my fellow Weather Weenies so much.I fell last Friday and I have been in the Hospital,I got out last night.I fractured my left Eye Socket.I had Surgery this past Monday to rebuild the socket with a Titiaium Bar.I do still see double out of the Left eye so I have an eye patch on over it.I get my stitches out next week. The Dr said I should get my vision back in the next 3 weeks to 3 months.I have missed you guys so much and the blog.I am so thankful I can see enough to read it again.Everyone stay safe and warm.Chris I watched you from my hospital room with my good eye.
Wow i hadn’t heard i hope you recover quickly
Thank you.
Get well soon Crystal. I’m so sorry your having to go through this. Prayers going up for you my friend.
Get well soon! 🙂
Thank you.
Crystals an old timer on the blog. Sorry about your bad luck but glad to hear your doing better.
So sorry crystal glad you are home and back with us…
Plenty of time before next week for the model’s to iron themselves out..The sign’s are there for an ‘Old timey’ for us hill folk’s….I do love a 20 inch snow in late Feb. or March..The Big Dog is just around the corner..Woof Woof..
Was going to say something, but apparently no one wants to know about my lack of snow ;). Nothing else to say I guess. May come back to the blog if I ever get a snow. On a side note, Andy is one of a few on here that follows the blog 365 days a year and posts during the uneventful times even in summer. The earlier posts directed toward him was uncalled for. I don’t understand why someone has to be rude to someone just because someone posts that his area has been left out. I follow a lot of blogs, and this one here has to have more miserable and inconsiderate people on it than anywhere else.
A lot of Venting from the one’s from the north and west who has received no snow in the last 5 yrs i guess..For some reason a lot of people think’s Eastern Ky has received no snow this winter..Just look at the total’s from Jackson..Granted this has been no stellar year but at least we have not been without snow..Our day will come though..The Big Dog is just around the corner and he is foaming from the mouth big time..
My area has received 5-6 inches and several inch or less events. Everyone may get their wish by this time next week.
Guess it depends on where you are located in the Jackson NWS coverage area on whether you have received decent snow totals. Andy’s (and mine) area doesnt get a lot of results from the upslope systems that areas to the northeast of us do. The section of the state including Pulaski, Laurel, Mcreary, Knox, Bell, and Whitley have not gotten anything decent this year and are well below average. I’m sure area in a line west of this is in the same boat. Might get one, might not. Personally I could care less either way. It’s at the point of winter now that you get some warm days scattered here and there. The part of the year when you can get back outside and get some work done around the house may be my favorite part of the year.
And let’s not forget they have good to big snows in the past 16 yearn’. It is us river dwellers to the south that are the main snow deprived ones. A long forgotten tribe, we be.
Who has?
I live in Nelson County….more “The Fence” than Bubba will ever know…..?! I feel bad for Andy….he’s in an area that gets rain or nothing…I am in an area that gets either rain, ice, or nothing….in the same dang boat!? Sure…we’ve gotten some “toe-biter’s” the last few weeks, but to ME, that isn’t ANYTHING…??! Maybe the “Snow-God’s” will bless me & Andy both w/ some worthwhile snowfall (6″- 30″+??!) soon…..
Andy is tough and can take it! That said, there are obviously many-many things much worse than missing good to big snows. It is just the uncanny way the things miss every year and year out, regardless of system type. THAT is the nutty thing about it.
All winter maybe 2 inches in Adair Co.. Would love to see a real snow!
East frankfort has had 4-6 inches of snow on the ground since last Sunday, as Chris said lately it’s going no where soon, if I could send some south I would gladly, cabin fever is not your friend 😉
