Good Wednesday everyone and what should be another active weather day across the state. Tuesday brought a couple of rounds of slow moving thunderstorms that put down a lot of rain across parts of the area. Reports of up to 5″ of rain were received from a few areas… an indication of the amount of tropical juice these storms have to work with. Boomers are likely to return to the area once again today… and we may see a similar outcome in some parts of the state.
Given the recent trend of a supercharged atmosphere that produces heavy rains and flash flooding at the drop of a hat… I have been very surprised we have not seen our NWS offices being more proactive in getting watches up. The purpose of a Watch is to get the word out that flash flooding is POSSIBLE. That is certainly the case today and possibly into Thursday as well.
Showers and storms will become more common and more widespread this afternoon and evening. Torrential downpours can lead to more flash flooding concerns so be extra cautious if you live in a flood prone area. You can track the action here…
A cold front will move our way Thursday and should result in more showers and storms. If we can a few rays of sun before the front arrives.. some of the storms could be on the strong side. Once again… any storm will have some heavy rains.
GFS Thursday Afternoon

Behind the front… Friday looks to be a great day with temps in the low and mid 80s with lower humidity levels and sunshine. That probably won’t hold into the weekend as the warmer air tries to fight back in here. In doing so… it may bring a cluster or two of storms rolling in from the northwest later Saturday into Saturday night.
I will have updates as needed today so check back. Have a great Wednesday and take care.

Can anyone give me a hint as t when the models are kinda showing this heat going away? I’ll even take average heat for this time of year. This is just crazy. I hate it.

LMK issued a Watch at 4:45 yesterday, AFTER the storms had already missed us and other counties were flooding…then they cancelled it two hours later. What the heck is that? LMK has, in my opinion, always been one of the better offices in the entire region. But I don’t know what’s going on over there this Summer. It’s like they are competing with SPC to see who can do the worst job.
I agree Jake. I got home from work last night completly wet!
From the look of the radar, storms are firing up exactly in the same spot as yesterday about this time!
Please, no more rain for Berea. I know it was said we got 3-5 inches in an hour, but let me tell you it was more like 30 minutes. My neighbors yard had whitecaps in their front yard and they live near the top the entire neighborhood. And the lightning, I counted 4-5 bolts hitting per minute for about 20 minutes…many close enough to charge the air. I’ve lived here for 20 years and this storm was the worst non-tornadic one our town has seen in that time.
If you have another one like that…please turn it around and send it toward Lawrenceburg. I’m tired of seeing my water bill go nuts just to keep my grass and trees from turning brown and dying off.
The way the radar looks right now I would say Nicholaville and Lexington will actually get some good rain. I wouldn’t be surprised if it dries up or goes over us without dropping even a sprinkle. Like most of these storms seem to do for us.

and the thunder rolls….hope we get some rain this time.
Intense storm just passed thru my area in SW Breathitt Co intense lightning and lots of thunder no rain though. Electric did blink a couple times. Sure pray it does not go off.
I’ve noticed a trend this summer, at least in my back yard. We get the worst storms on the days where there is only a 10 to 20 percent chance of “isolated” storms. On the days where there is a 50/60 percent chance, we barely get anything.
No rain in Richmond today…the rain just couldn’t stay together long enough to do any good.
Go to farmersalmanac.com and check out the forum section on weather. there are many INTERESTING outlooks for WINTER 10/11
That sir, is a deal. Btw, if you happen to have a heat pump running your AC, you can get 5-10 gallons a day of free water by cutting off the drain line and redirecting the water to come out for capture outside the unit. Mine is actually clogged, so I’ve been getting this result unintentionally for a couple years now.
