Good Monday everyone as we say hello to the last week of July. The Sunday storms didn’t live up to the billing across most of Kentucky as a lot of the energy went just to our east producing deadly flash flooding and severe weather in West Virginia. I don’t think anyone around here will complain about that.

For the area I now cover with my TV job…  flash flood events over the past 8 days have claimed the lives of 5 people (3 in Kentucky) and resulted in millions of dollars in damages and a countless number of lives forever changed. Here is hoping we can get a change in this pattern at some point soon. The problem is… this pattern is repetitive and I see more flash flood events before summer is over (maybe even this week).

If you are wondering how we stand in terms of rainfall this summer. Take a look at where we stand for some selected cities since June 1st…

Lexington: 10.04″  +1.52″

Louisville: 8.14″  +0.89″

Jackson : 8.17″  – 0.25″

Covington : 9.35″  +1.90″

Bowling Green : 8.94″  +0.91″

Ashland: 10.28″  +2.78″

Paducah :  4.00″  -4.22″

As you can see from that list… the wettest part of the state is our farthest east point in Ashland while the driest location is the farthest west spot in Paducah. Detecting a trend here? This is why the western part of the state has been MUCH warmer than the rest of Kentucky.

How about the weather today? The boundary has slipped a bit farther south meaning the greatest risk for showers and storms today will be across the southern part of the region. Yes… locally heavy rains will be a good possibility and that is something we will watch out for given the trends of the summer.  Track all the action here…

The moisture will work farther northward Tuesday into Wednesday as scattered showers and thunderstorms will be much more common across all areas. Heavy downpours could lead to localized high water issues.

The good news about all this is our temps will generally be normal with highs in the 80s through the middle of the week.

I will have updates as needed so check back. Have a great Monday and take care.
