Good Wednesday everyone. The showers and thunderstorms of the past few days have come and gone and now it’s the heat that will take center stage for a couple of days. Unlike the last go around with the 90s… this one won’t last very long as some boomers return for the upcoming weekend.
Once the fog burns off this morning… skies will become partly sunny as temps warm into the upper 80s in most areas. A 90 is possible in a few of the hotter spots. Western Kentucky will see readings into the low and middle 90s.
Thursday is likely to be the warmest day of the next week or so as readings soar into the low and maybe middle 90s. High humidity levels will mean the feel like temp can reach 100 or slightly better. The farther west you live… the hotter it is going to be and feel.
Humidity levels will continue to increase Friday and that will combine with an approaching cold front to produce some scattered showers and thunderstorms… especially in the afternoon and evening. Outside of any storm action… temps will warm toward the low 90s once again. That front will settle into the region Friday night and Saturday before washing out. It will be the focal point for more widespread showers and thunderstorms during that time.
Saturday Morning
Saturday Evening
Looking ahead to next week.. the core of the heat is likely to remain to our west but should make a couple of runs at us. A couple of cold fronts will drop southward into the Ohio Valley during that time to cut it off at the pass before it can fully scoot in. These fronts should also mean more chances at thunderstorms.
If you are noticing a trend here… fronts are actually making their way through the region this summer and that has been keeping the heat from taking full control around here.
I promised a VERY early hint about the long range pattern for later in the year. With La Nina taking hold out in the Pacific and the past years I am finding to match up with this one… fall should turn out to be on the frosty side with colder than normal temps. The big question is… do I expect that to carry over into the upcoming winter. Granted… it is super early in the game so I can’t say too much. But I do like the look of the start of winter… the end… not so much.
Have a great Wednesday and take care.
I would love if fall was crisp and frosty and below normal. I can take a nice early winter but the ending being warm wouldn’t be so great.
The beginning will probably be to dry but cold and the ending will be wet and warm. Our luck!
A frosty fall sounds absolutely wonderful to me.
Thanks for the brief winter update Chris!
Interesting about La nina…. I wonder if the southeastern ridge will return to haunt us. It seems to me that most La nina winters usually have delayed winters that don’t really begin until late january and last through march. Take 07-08 for instance, december was a dud but march was pretty snowy. I guess we’ll see…
We had three inches of rain in Bourbon County yesterday. Will that help us stay a tad cooler than the mid-90’s on Thursday?
As for the winter forecast, I have much more enthusiasm for cold weather in the earlier months. The holiday season is much more festive when it’s cold. By February, I’m ready to move on and get things warmer. Therefore, Chris’ early thoughts sound like the perfect winter for me. 🙂
Chris, don’t tease us like that! It’s too early tothink about right now! 😉
Thanks for the update. We got some good, much needed rain yesterday, but the day was not a total washout, by any means. Just a good, rainy day.
Everyone have a GREAT Wednesday!
i emailed the nws in louisville and they said that la nina usually brings wetter and warmer winters. they added that the wetter outweighs the warmer.
Enough talk about winter. 😉 Today marks the anniversary of the hottest temperature ever recorded in Louisville – 107. With the way the ASOS near the airport records temperatures nowadays, I wonder if that record could go down when we get our next big-time heat wave? It got up to 105 there on 8/16/07.
Hey, CB! What about the middle of winter? Sorry folks, but I for one love winter…all this humidity is awful. I know it’s early yet, but I like CB’s “pre-game” show.
Thanks for the hint Chris. With the heat I have to put up with at work, I like to hear about cooler even colder weather.
The current CPC outlook for Winter shows the same thing that they told you. Average to slightly warmer than average temps….and above average precip. here. Personally, I hope it DOESN’T turn frosty…because farmers had to plant late this year and they need a longer growing season this year.
Even Lexington hit 102°F that day. 🙂 And it’s almost impossible to get LEX that hot. The LEX ASOS has an ice pack attached to it most of the time. That was a HOT stretch of weather.
I’m not a summer person. I love the spring, winter and fall. Fall is my favorite. Thanks for the update Chris. It will be here before you know it.
Near 90 dewpoints in parts of Iowa??? How is that even possible, they are not even close to an ocean
