Good afternoon, gang. My time is very limited as we are dealing with flooding across many areas of the state. The transition to sleet and snow is taking place across western and northern parts of the state and that sweeps across the rest of the state later today.
First things first… respect the high water! Keep a very close eye on water levels where you are and NEVER attempt to drive through a flooded roadway. TURN AROUND DON’T DROWN!!
I have no substantial changes to my thoughts on the sleet and snow forecasts…
This will be a thumping snow for much of the region and it’s one that could cause power issues before all is said and done. The heaviest snow develops this evening and carries us into Thursday morning. Thunder is very possible!
I will have a Last Call For Snowfall on WKYT-TV starting at 4pm. We will also have continuing team coverage of this major winter storm and flooding as long as it takes. Yes, I’m packing a bag for work tonight. 🙂
Updates will come when I can do them. Track away…

Good looking map Chris. You are the expert but my thoughts match up well with this one
Terrific map. Maybe high up in Indiana, but really good stuff. 10-12 inches will will be very common from north central ky into central and eastern kentucky.
Not doubting you one bit and hope them maps pan out.
Going off a two decades of trends for Louisville I see us on the lower end of the totals. Hope I am wrong. 8-14 sounds good to me.
Well, you do have one supporter (WDRB41) saying 4-8″ for Louisville.
VERY different opinions on the way this storm plays out, as their high end total is Chris Bailey’s low end total.
Maybe it can hit 8″ and they both be right. Then everybody can hold hands and sing kumbayah.
Funny
Their most recent post has 5-10″ for Louisville and Lexington. So I guess anywhere between 8-10″, and they are both right! 🙂
Not sure if my therm. is accurate right now or not, but I’ve got 38 here in SW Lex. It just dropped about 3 degrees in about 45 minutes.
I think it is correct. I am fluctuating between 38/39 right now in Hamburg area.
37 in frankfort (east side)…dropped 5 degrees since 10 am…
Snow is getting so close. Going to stay up to watch some of this one!
Friend just called from northwest Louisville…frozen rain/sleet hitting his windshield in the Portland area
Going to be a gradual transition to snow. Rain / sleet mix could hold tough most of the afternoon. The cold is seeping in slowly so not going to be a fast transition. Add the fact it is March and the sun angle is getting higher, hard to transition from rain to snow during the afternoon hours without a fast push of cold air. Central Indiana is still in the upper 20’s. I think the lower end of the forecasted snow amounts will verify but 14 inches will take a much faster transition this afternoon.
I have to go to sleep. When I wake up, I’ll bet snow is falling 😀 xoxoxo
maybe it will snow in your dreams
Chris you stayed north with all your totals. All recent model runs have slightly shifted south with the heaviest snow axis. Any emphasis on why u don’t agree
The NAM went south. The GFS came back north.
Which model, NAM or GFS, has shown most reliability this close to a storm?
I would say neither one this winter..
To late in the game to be concerned with models. The event is here and nowcasting is the way,
I have always wanted to experience thundersnow. Hope I get to see it with this system. Would be cool but don’t expect I would go into convulsions like weather channel guy.
You wouldn’t go into a coniption fit (as my Papaw always called them!),and you’re not an attention-getter like Cantore….. but it IS a pretty awesome thing to witness! My 1st. was the Jan. ’94 storm-I’d awakened around 3am to barely “spitting” flurries, and when I got up for work @ 5:30, I turned on the radio to WHAS & they were talking about all the snow they were getting, and just then, I saw a big flash of lightning and a loud rumble of thunder, and I was like, “Oh, WONDERFUL! THEY get the snow, and we down here (Bardstown) get a thunderstorm!!?” -I let my Doberman’s out, didn’t pay attention to what was outside, and when they came in covered in snow, I was like, “Huh??!”-I stepped out on the deck and it thundered again! We had about 9-10″ by that time and it was snowing so hard I couldn’t see the big spruce tree in front of the deck! It truly is an awesome thing to see!
I have experienced thundersnow an it was a whopping big snow. Very interesting to hear thunder and snowing to beat the band.
34 degrees and sleet mixing with rain in Floyd Co. IN.
36 already and light rain in Olive Hill. Temp was forecasted to be 43 at this time by TWC. My county has consistently been in the 14 inch range on all the models. Just that little pink blip in a lot of blue. Just something to think about.
Interesting to note that Micah posted on his facebook page that the later changeover would push the totals down a couple inches….?
He gave a snow totals map on the news. Lexington had the highest total of 11.4 inches on his map. With 10.4 for Frankfort and 9.4 for Richmond. Possible higher amounts depending on bursts of snow. He still had the Louisville area getting around 9 inches.
With detailed numbers like that, it has to be a computer model- probably their in-house model, and not a forecast.
He posted on the WKYT weather page at 11:15 AM that indicated the heaviest zone is 8-12″ instead of the upper limit of 14″. That would be consistent with the Facebook post I mentioned.
Agreed. It looked as if Frankfort across to Lexington would be the big time snow getter.
Went from 5-10 to 2-6…Winning..
Where r u at??
Location?
I think 5-10 is a safer bet for the area highlighted as 8-14.
3-7 for the areas below that, and 2-4 for extreme southern ky
Sunny and 72° here in Athens tn..
As much as I dread shoveling a metric crapton of snow or sleet, this rain really needs to stop.
People under Berea Municipal Utilities, they are asking everyone to limit water use due to the strain currently on the sewer system.
I’m so relieved that this “isn’t a major flood event”.
https://kyweathercenter.com/?p=13831
Good luck to everyone out there. Do your best to help those you know can’t manage on their own. Work slow, work steady, and take small breaks. This snow is going to push your limits with it’s weight.
See you on the other side.
Temp at Louisville has steadied at 37 degrees although dewpoint continues to creep down. Hard to get the temp to drop in the afternoon with this March sun angle. Still all rain at my house. Louisville will transition to snow a few hours before Lexington.
Gotta love all these self proclaimed meteorologists on here lol
Weather blog so folks talk weather stuff 🙂
We have all flavahs’ here. Everything from a goat driven bust to a thumping. Discussion is fun!
Past models here and in nowcastah’ mode. Looking at models at this point can be a big fat red herrings in either direction.
It is now sleeting here in Edwardsville (Floyd County), Indiana.
Evansville just recently started seeing snow mixing in with sleet.
light rain and 53 in London …. radar looks like this storm is pushing north …. could SE KY be spared ?
Yesterday I posted my prediction of 1-3 for Wayne County & someone scoffed at that suggestion…I’m still holding firm on that. I noticed that the nws has lowered their totals a bit for my area as well. I think it’ll be tough to get those temps down enough to produce a snowy solution until a lot of the moisture has pushed out.
Don’t take that bullet out of your pocket just yet 😉
I think 1-3 inches of rain is spot on already sitting at 1.22 . 😉 Fire that bullet
I was referring to the snow part. Too early to say any direction.
I am tuning out all the bust commenters and only focused on my fellow snow lovers. This system still looks good. I hope to see MANY inches fall! It’s hard as a fellow snow lover not to focus on the high end totals but in my book a snow is a snow and I will be happy! Bring it on! Bring it on!
Even if you get the low end, 8 or 9 inches, that Is still a good snow
Totally agree! I enjoy it no matter the amount! I already told my kids to prepare their shovels 🙂
http://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=809265269148976
That is awful I hope everyone is safe. Where is this location?
i think in WV.. found the video on WSAZ
Yes, WKYT at Noon said it was in WV just across the river from Pikeville I believe.
logan county, WV
I am in Pikeville and it looks bad especially behind my house.
By the way the 12Z EURO looks good! Sorry, before you ask, I don’t know how to post it. But just google it. That’s what I did.
Enjoy the numbers. Wouldn’t it be nice if they came true!
Where did you look? Couldn’t find it
I know CB has TV casts to prepare for, but CB by “law” should be required to tweet every 30 minutes when in nowcast mode 😉
I think this guy has a pic of the most recent Euro http://twitter.com/StevenHorvitz
Holy cow! The Euro doesn’t play around. Frankfort/Lexington would get pounded if this happened.
I always do a search on twitter for the most recent model runs. People are alway posting model run maps on twitter. ..haha
Primarily rain in Louisville but sleet is gradually mixing in
I would like for it change over to snow soon. Basically depending on what’s now in Arkansas and Texas to be our snow. That’s what I was saying earlier. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s just a repeat of the last storm. Keep waiting and waiting but never gets cold enough. What was so different about the Presidents day storm was that it was plenty cold enough already.
That system was reverse. Cold air already in place but warm air flow moving in with the moisture. Newer territory as far as forecasting, but the thought was the cold air and snow pack in place would dominate and bolster cooling rather than warming.
This one you have warm air in place and moisture moving in and cold air coming down to join in. It SHOULD result in sleet to heavy snow for a lot of folks.
Still, Mother Nature badger don’t care and will do what wants.
going be disappointed snow luvers after this one….
Rolo, are you smoking that goat weed again?
maybe where you are…
we are going to get plenty in Louisville area.
Sleet in Louisville temps tanking fast western ky below freezing with upper 20’s already showing on KY mesonet. The SREF has increased snow totals everything Rolo is saying just the opposite is already occurring.
Nah, Rolo probably knows he will probably miss this one, but he is sticking to one position and no Rolocoaster. I like the coaster myself, but if Rolo ain’t selling tickets, there is no ride.
I like snow but it doesn’t take a whole lot to satisfy me.I won’t be one bit disappointed if I don’t see a flake fall.So tired from the last one. Also I am concerned about the weight of this wet snow on trees etc with such intensely saturated ground.I are truly hoping we get very little.
am *are*
I hate auto correct at times.
You are being quite the trollo today…
Rololo
Sleet mixing in with the rain, not quite a 50/50 mix yet. I think I saw a flake or two if snow mixed in.
I am in northern Louisville, right on the river in the Portland neighborhood
of*
how much am I going to get?
It took a couple hours, but, finally full on sleet now in NE Lou. (Worthington Hills)
Temp is now 34 here.
The short range SREF and RAP models have really cranked up totals along and south of the river. I still think my 6-10″ is a good range, with caution that some areas will develop banding this evening, and those spots could easily get up to 12″ (isolated areas).
I know we aren’t using models this late in the game, but looks like the slight increase in totals from GFS and Euro might not be far off from the real thing.
Although I think Euro is a little bit out there with its totals. Lexington is NOT going to see 18 inches of snow. If we do I will eat some crow.
If you are low on provisions, that might be all you have to eat to survive! 🙂 😉
Went to the store on Monday and spent over the weekly budget just in case. I think we will be alright. 🙂 lol
I did the same then picked up a pizza on the way home. Ha!
18 inches in Lex…A LOT of naysayers would be eatin’ crow tomorrow!!! Just starting to mix some sleet in Ffort at 230
C-Biv I just saw a report that Valley Station is starting to see snowflakes mixing in which I guess makes sense you cross the river from Valley Station and your in Harrison County Indiana
Big flakes now mixing with the sleet here.
Wow, I mean big!
Doesn’t seem like sleet will be a big player in cutting totals at all. It’s 40/60 snow/sleet right now.
Moderate sleet now falling in the Lyndon area of Louisville. On the radar, this looks to be part of the transition line from rain, to mix, to snow. Snow may be an hour or two ahead of schedule here.
The Bust Monkeys may need to zoom out to national radar and notice the moisture pumping TOWARD US FROM FR IGGIN NEW MEXICO LOL
Bust goats 🙂 Tribute to Rolo.
I love the Bust Goats and Bust Monkeys. Can’t wait for the reunion tour
This has not even begun to start yet 😀
Full sleet and snow mixing in now, no rain at all in North Louisville in the Portland neighborhood
Still all rain in south Louisville near the GS Freeway. Yet to see or hear a sleet pellet. 12Z Euro still has a 15 inch max just south of the river. I want what it is smoking!
Getting reports from businesse and tweets it is already sleeting and snowing in Louisville.
Sleet gonna cut them totals down I think we gonna be lucky to get 3-5 there in the middle of the state. I ain’t calling bailey wrong I just think it’s gonna be a bust. I’m with the rolo guy on this one. Ain’t much to see here but a bunch of floodin.
LOL
One of the goatbusters! 😉
It was sleeting here in Lexington around 6:00. It has turned to all snow around 7:30. Coming down at a good clip here in south Lexington. Roads and sidewalks are covered with a small amount of sleet beneath it. Everyone be careful if you have to go out tonight.
Now right at 37 here in SW Lex.
snowing in Edgewood, KY (NKY)….
Still 52 and rain here in Carrie of knott co.
Complete switch over to snow in Crittenden, Ky biggest snowflakes I’ve seen all year.
52 here as well in Knox
According to twitter the sleet isn’t lasting long for some in Louisville. If that’s the case wouldn’t that mean our snow totals would be on the higher side? If that 15 or 18″ happened I would eat crow with you Ashley!
Haha, glad I’m not the only one. The highest total amount I saw yesterday for Lexington was 16 inches. So, if we hit that I wouldn’t be surprised. 18 just seems like a stretch.
Sleet isn’t lasting long in the west, so who knows at this point until it happens! 🙂
Now mostly snow, with a bit of sleet, falling in the Lyndon area of Louisville. About 2-3 hours ahead of schedule on transition it seems. The sleet period was no more than an hour.
Now it’s pretty much rain in the Lyndon area. Switching back and forth for the next couple of hours I guess.
all of you that keep saying bust, should relax and let the storm come to you.
It sleeted good for 30 minutes and now is 90% snow and coming down good, here in NE Louisville, and in many areas across the city now.
Let the goatbusters have their say! 🙂 Part of the fun!
Amen!
People tweeting snow in Louisville but all I see is green on the radar. Still a cold rain in woodford ky.
It sleeted for about 5-10 minutes here where I live in Louisville. Turned back to rain. Not seen a flake of snow.
sorry to hear that….plenty of videos and pics going around twitter showing snow and sleet in Louisville.
You must live near the heat island (airport)?
Also, don’t trust the radar in these transition type of storms.
I will say, we are back to 90% sleet, 10% snow in NE Lou.
It will bounce back and forth for a couple hours.
Mini dome? I would like one over my area and the trees around our power lines 🙂
You want Many mini domes
Radar is having issues playing catch up with the sleet and snow reports for some strange reason
35 at the airport in Louisville what that tells me most places in Louisville sitting between 33-34 degrees. I give a hour maybe 2 tops and all snow. Look at the Ky mesonet temps just to the west of Louisville upper 20″s getting very close to mid 20’s sleet absolutely will not last much longer atmosphere temps are now tanking at all levels
Reds won yesterday, so did the Cats, so now we get some snow! Winning!
Only after the Cards win!
Now let’s not get too carried away. 😉
Yes!
Saddlin up my goat to take a ride in the rain. Old lady done been to the walmarts though just in case. She actin like we gonna be shut down like last time. Ain’t gonna happen I told her she best get in the kitchen and start fixin my supper.
LOL! It’s not even 3 pm. What time do you eat supper??
Someone should design a goat buster t shirt!
This!
http://cdn.fashionablygeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/goatbusters.jpg?22a92a
Temp is slowly dropping here.Very cold rain and 42 now.
Going back and forth between 37/38 here in Hamburg part of Lexington. Still raining….
Who ya gonna call? Goat Busters..
Lol…….their thoughts on this storm will be a bust.
Nws In Louisville has posted new totals. http://www.crh.noaa.gov/images/lmk/pdf/briefing/Mar04_2015_300PM.pdf
NWS seems to always be at least 25% less than CB maps so makes sense.
Rodger liking all that moisture rising out of the southwest on a train for here! Have had a mix of sleet and snow at his place near Henderson for the past 2 1/2 hours. Moderate now but not too heavy. Rodger in Dodger!
Just looked out side…a light rain is falling now in north Louisville
Wow! Dropped from 38 to 36 in Hamburg area of Lexington in less than 20 minutes.
Got 36 here in SW Lex. also.
35.8 here in northern Fayette Co.!
I have a question and please don’t smart me off I am not in the mood lol. When the change over does occur here from rain to snow is that going to keep us from flooding or will the river continue to rise? Getting very worried about now but mother nature will do what it is going to do it is going to be a long night.
From what I gathered, when it changes to snow the flooding will decrease due to freezing temperatures. When it starts thawing out though, there may be problems. I’m not a meteorologist though. 🙂
Thanks then come on snow.
Nam?
storm has already started.
The NAM, GFS, GEM, EURO, etc…are not a tool to use at this point.
Chris just tweeted bout it
I know, lol…just isn’t something the MET’s tend to use this late in the game.
Although, if it verified, there would be a mess in many places.
You have map?
This much I can say….JCPS should NOT have cancelled school today.
There were no indications that would have led them to believe they couldn’t dismiss at 12:30 or 1pm and get all the kids home safely by 4:30.
Thankfully, I don’t have to worry about it with my kid. They let school out at 1pm and got a full day credit.
Shelby County went a full day with no problems. Sleet is just now starting as the last of the kids are making it home.
Rain quickly changed to all sleet. Just a few mins later snow has started to mix in.
@Kentuckyweather My goodness, NAM. #kywx #WKYTRulesWinter
Need Jim Ross to do the call if it’s that good/bad
By gawd! We have a real slobber knocker here folks. The NAM just gave central Kentucky the sweet chin music. I don’t think these folks can recover from that devastating move. Someone get the national guard out here! Try my BBQ sauce!
That made me laugh
It’s killing me. I gotta see it.
Up near Jackson, Ohio here. Charleston NWS has lowered snow totals for 6-10 to 3-7.
from not “for”
The NWS in Louisville has issued a new snow map at the 3:00 o’clock hour and it has moved the significant snow further to the south. It has moved the northern half of Jefferson County (Louisville) into just a 4-7 inch area. As of this morning’s update, the entire area was in a 7-11 range.
Just north of the city, they have a 2-5 inch band. Their maps suggest a sharp cutoff with south Jefferson in a high total of 8 or more but one or two counties north of the river at just 2-5.
Looks like there is going to be a very sharp cutoff with Louisville (yet again) as the battle zone.
They still have 6-9″ for central and eastern, and 8-10″ for the southern/eastern part of county.
A really tough forecast if Louisville has a 4-10″ range, with just 2-5″ right across the river.
Given the long fetch of moisture that extends all the way back to west Texas and the northern extent of the precipitation shield, I was surprised by their new totals. But they are the experts, not me.
That totally figures.
I think this will be a major bust for the Bowling Green area. It will be mostly rain and some sleet, and very little snow. We’re too far south for this one.
Why would you say that it is currently 37 degrees and dropping pretty fast. There is plenty of moisture left in this system, and our setup on the different snow fall maps isn`t bad. We might be a little bit on the lower end, but I don`t see this one busting.
lol, have you seen the radar or national fronts maps? This system extends back into New Mexico.
STILL waiting on a transition in south Louisville. All rain, no sleet. 18Z NAM has increased totals, again, but we need this to transition soon.
Patience obi wan 😉
NAM is not happening
can you post a link please.
No he can’t.
Eastern Jeff Co….all rain. 34′ F
Just hit 32 in Hopkinsville, mix of sleet/rain. Y’all be safe!
Here’s the last nam. http://wxcaster4.com/nam/CONUS1_MESO-NAM212_SFC_ACCUM-SNOWFALL-KUCHERA_48HR.gif
Thanks Tom!
According to that, Jefferson County, KY is in a 12″+ area. It truly must be nowcasting. I am not sure how it will pan out. Do storms really produce more than predicted anymore. Seems lately it’s been less. Maybe this will be different.
Sleet is starting to mix in with the rain here.
Nice!
sleeting hard in NE Louisville right now.
Air Temp 32.9
Carroll county says 3-5 from NWS. It’s already working on turning the group white. I’m really no expert but I think we will exceed the forecast based on the radar.
Looks like new NAM reduces totals in Huntington wv area by a lot. Hopefully it fizzles out and misses us
HUGE snowflakes in New Albany IN
? Doesn’t look like that at all
It’s all sleet again in the Lyndon area of Louisville and there may be a few flakes mixing in as well.
Right now though, it seems the precipitation type is dependent on the intensity. The heavier stuff brings down cold air and we get sleet/snow. The lighter precip brings rain.
The flooding in eastern KY overshadows the snow aspect of this storm.
Yep the snow will not be worth mentioning here it never is for storms like these as usual more inches of rain than inches of frozen precip.
Have 34 here in SW Lex.
Still cold rain by the way.
Sleet mixing in with the rain in Frankfort.
Very heavy snow now falling in Lyndon area of Louisville.
Marc Weinberg tweeted the dual-pol radar shows the sleet/snow line moving south now.
Pouring snow in St Mathews (east Louisville). So pretty. Deck crunchy with sleet and now white with snow.
100% snow falling in hikes point
High water was the reason school was dismissed at 1P.M. today here in Carter Co. Our temps here are just now falling into the 30’s, so the threat of snow did not enter into the decision. Several areas are so flood prone and after a prolonged rain, those roads are covered in no time. I’ve seen the water much higher here near town, but the Rush and Norton Branch area are very low lying and had water over several roads. Everybody stay safe.
Same in Knox at 12
The tinkling has stopped and snow now falling in St. Matthews. With 21 beers in the fort, more than enough safety stock to get me through the UL/Notre Dame game. Woohoo!
Still stuck in sleet here. Near Iroquois park.
Cloverleaf has sleet and snow trying to get going. I think LouMetro may miss out on the heavy stuff. Transition too late and central KY may get the big stuff.
This is supposed to be through the night and tomorrow morning.
35 here in greenup
Sleeting in western Franklin County and just beginning to transition to large snowflakes.
I could be wrong…but I think I am now feeling just a wee bit of sleet mixed in with the cold rain here in SW Lex. Still 34.
Setting at 50 in Carrie of knott co
“River Road” (back way from Beattyville to Irvine) closed due to high water. It creates a detour of about 40 miles to get around since there is no sign of the road closure until you get right up to the flooded area rather than a sign in town saying the road is closed ahead… Anyway, better safe than sorry and washed down the river…
Snowing hard here at western, ky
Currently 66 degrees in Knoxville at 5:00 p.m. Was 72 at 4:00 p.m. Winds are around 13 mph. Feels and looks like tornado weather here with menacing gray clouds. No rain at present but lots of moisture to the west. Here in Knoxville not supposed to get below freezing temps until around 6:00 a.m. Thursday morning. Crazy weather!!!!
Huge sleet pellets starting to mix with a little snow in Georgetown. Roads had a covering of sleet on them.
Went from rain to snow in about 2 mins to sleet mixed in here in Jackson ohio
Somebody that tweeted CB said they have snow covering their groin already lol
Boy that will make anyones groin cold and hurting! 🙂
Finally went to all snow in Louisville.
have you seen any wind gust so far.
I have had around three to four in the last 10 minutes
coming down heavy now In The Hikes point area with some blowing snow.
Probably a couple in the 20-25 mph range. It’s pouring the snow now.
Winter wonderland in Henderson, 21 degrees, couple of inches on the ground, snow moderate to heavy.
It is now 32 with sleet in SW Lex. Temp. dropping fast.
We need the Goat Busters!
Rain still pouring in Huntington. Temp is 39 and falling but like a snail. Just as suspected the warm out is hard to blow out of the I64 corridor.
Dropped 10 degrees In a bit over an hr currently 44 and 2.35 inches of rain
37 in Boyd County. It was not supposed to switch over in this area & Huntington until later.
It will be your way soon,Jimbo. Just started in Boyd County.
We’ve gone to all snow here with huge flakes coming down. It is accumulating quickly.
Ditto in Frankfort. Wow this is going to get big really quickly.
31 degrees near Maysville, snow covering all surfaces here in eastern Mason County.
Transition will be as much from West to east as from North to South. For example, Nashville is not far from freezing now. Have you EVER seen such a line of overriding moisture all the way back to NewMexico!? If it lays down a layer of sleet first we are in for it here on the TN/KY border.
sleet floats 😉
Sleeting in greenup
OK, I’m up – sleet hitting my window in Lex, cold air moving…..Anything 8 plus is a big snow, according to Bubba. Can we get 2 this year?
Great memory! 8″ is a big snow. That is the threshold 🙂
I’m actually glad I slept through the “waiting” period. Just now read through the comments….It sounds like this afternoon has been a long one!
The national radar sure is loaded with moisture
Snow flakes north west Lex!!!
Just had a burst of heavy (as in small “pea-sized”) sleet in Bardstown….snow trying to mix in…
Sleet fell for about one hour in Versailles. Rapid change to giant snowflakes and coming down fast. Roads covered in a matter of 10 minutes.
32 in SW Lex., sleet and snow mixed in now.
it is absolutely pouring snow in northwest Lexington
a fresh inch of snow in NE Louisville!
28.5 air temp and tanking…the lower it goes, the higher the snow ratio will be.
Sorry Rolo, not a bust!
It’s starting to change over to sleet in BG.
Sleet didn’t last long, pretty much all snow now in greenup
West Frankfort is getting HAMMERED!!!
Ain’t it! I’m not sure I’ve ever seen snow accumulate this quickly. It’s so fluffy it looks fake.
Well its official the weather channel reporting from Lexington
Seen somebody on there at Louisville
Yep, Maria Larosa is reporting live from triangle park in downtown Lexington. Cantore was thinking about coming to Lex, but decided to go to DC instead. Figures.
Who needs Cantore lol
We’ve picked up an inch so far as the snow continues to pile up quickly.
Just got a text from my local news. State of emergency declared in WV.
Areas in Indiana reporting 4 inches already. These are places that were supposed to be low end totals.
sleet at Clays Ferry..tick, tick, tick…..
POURING sleet in Southern Jessamine. I am worried about it cutting my snow totals! I am ready for the snow! Come on push that line just a tad farther south please.
My kids are enjoying “shoveling” the sleet though. I told them when they wake up they will hopefully have a whole snow covered driveway to shovel!
Ronald – it’s not far from you – trust me!
In the Lyndon area of Louisville it continues to snow heavily and has been snowing since 4:30 or so. I would guess, by eyeballing, I’ve received about 1.5 inches so far.
In the Lyndon area of Louisville it continues to snow heavily and has been snowing since 4:30 or so. I would guess, by eyeballing, I’ve received about 1.5 inches so far.
Pouring the snow in greenup
This is probably the heaviest sleet I have ever seen! Sleet covering the ground fast and big fat snowflakes are mixing in! I’d say as of this typing, it’s 75% sleet & 25% snow. Rain is now gone!
Also hearing of multiple reports of heavy snow now in North Lexington. Here in south, still sleet.
Louisville has heavy snow.
Sleet pounding outside in Burgin (Mercer County). National radar loop looks wicked.
Major rock slides occurring in Floyd County. Be careful out there.
visibility down to 1/4 mile in NE Louisville.
just relentless snow. Most places now saying from Louisville To E-town and points east through Lexington are bullseye for up to 12″ or even isolated higher amounts.
I heard that too. Along Ohio River, Louisville, and a stripe extending a long way will get a lot of snow.
It’s snowing very hard in Cloverleaf on the hill. I can’t see downtown right now.
At this moment, the snow rate looks heavier to me than it did with the last storm….
I noticed that oddity about that last storm. Cold air was already in place so the flakes couldn’t aggregate and was a very powdery snow. It looked like it wasn’t snowing hard but it was mostly 1″ an hour, which is impressive for this area. This one, the initial snow is going to be big and clumpy. Look for the flake size to decrease as the storm rolls on, but I don’t think it’ll get as powdery as the Feb. storm.
Sleet & a few HUGE flakes starting in Boyd County.
Biggest snowflakes I’ve ever seen here in greenup…literally looks like silver dollars
And the sleet only last 5 minutes, if that
Does anyone know when this conveyor belt of moisture will actually end from west to east in Central KY? I’m thinking 6 am? Or will it still be going on after that? Just curious because I’m limited with putting a model surface/radar future map into motion.
I think Louisville will be out of it by 5 am.
Sleet had started to mix back in in Versailles for a while, now all snow again. The radar returns are less impressive now, but that’s because the red colors (more reflective to radar) usually indicate sleet. You can also see the returns “streaking out” and becoming more band like and less cellular which indicates more snow. That streaky dark green/light yellow is heavy snow bands. It’s been fun to watch the returns “evolve” by observing the national radar loop.
There’s a LOT of moisture coming with this one as evidenced by the upstream returns. There are winter storm warnings all the way to the Tex/Mex border! Of course, a half inch of snow is probably WSW there.
If it stays cold enough for all snow, the totals should easily verify.
It’s just literally out and out POURING the snow right now in Lawrenceburg! With the rate at which it’s coming down and looking at radar returns from the southwest, I can easily see how we’ll end at the top range of totals here. A foot or more looks very reasonable at this point.
Heading out to measure in about a half hour. That will give me a 2 hour snowfall report from the initial changeover time.
Snowing 3″ per hour in NW ARKANSAS!!!!
Any new maps/models?
yes…the radar 🙂
nowcasting at this point. looks beefed up!
I don’t think there are any models that are helpful at this point. It’s mostly observing radar trends at this point. The dual-pol radar that the NWS has can tell the type of precipitation (sleet vs. snow vs. rain) and therefore the models won’t be used at this point since the radar can tell them in real-time what’s happening.
Thank you for a thorough response! Keeping an eye on the radar. A lot of snow here near Taylorsville in a short amount of time.
2.5″ of snow already and still coming down at a nice clip.
Wind gusts of 20-30 mph at times.
We’re up to 2 inches now. A snow plow just came through my neighborhood but the road just covered right back over.
Sleet switched to moderate/heavy snow in downtown Lexington.
100% snow now! Very heavy wet snow, radar looks super promising, hoping for a foot of snow!
What county are you in?
Fayette county
Is anyone out there in Madison Co. or Jackson Co.? Has sleet or snow started at either of those places yet?
42 in Carrie of knott co and rain At 730
Still a solid rain in south east clark Co
1 1/2″ an hour Crittenden co. N.w. of Paducah. 3″ so far with gusting winds.
Huge flakes in Springfield now.
I know it’s too early to say this, but for all the “misses” in the forecasts before, both the local mets and the NWS have done a great job forecasting this system. As early as Sunday night/Monday early, they’ve said the axis of heaviest precip would be along the BG/WK parkways and East-Northeastward. Looking at the radar trends, it looks like this is exactly what’s happening.
It’s very difficult to forecast this area of the country because the “battle zone” frequently sets up right over the OH Valley.
Great job so far!
Adam, I agree. It seems like (at least for my area) everything is coming together as scheduled. We had 2 inches of rain (heavy rain) which was forecast, then a changeover to sleet or heavy snow around rush hour (ish)…..Exactly what was forecast.

I cannot stop looking at the national radar loop. This system is loaded with moisture all the way to Texas. After all the back and forth today about changing snow totals, I am thinking we may indeed (Mercer County/ central Ky) hit the higher end of the snow totals.
Recently switched to a frozen mix in the Bowling Green area.
Im on the Boyd Co/Carter Co line and these are possibly the biggest flakes ive ever seen. Ground covered in less than 30 minutes.
Been snowing for a while now here in SW Lex. Some of the biggest flakes I’ve ever seen, and I’m originally from the north.
Oh…and it’s 30 degrees here.
It is pouring snow in Eastwood area of Louisville. Near Shelby and Oldham County lines!
I have noticed the snow is extremely heavy but the flakes themselves are getting smaller, even though it remains heavy. You can tell because it’s so heavy, there’s almost a foggy look as it comes down.
This is to be expected as the air gets colder and the snow gets less “wet” and therefore can’t clump as easily. The February storm was 1″+ per hour for most of it and it just looked “foggy.” Since the cold air was already in place, there was very little clumping of the flakes.
Good observation!
I’ll be happy if the “wet” snow doesn’t arrive here in Lexington. Where I live in south Lexington, if a mouse farts our power goes out. Snowing hard right now. It looks heaver than they last storm and we got 10 to 12 inches out of that one.
Already having satellite issues here in greenup…wonderful
Just lost mine in Rush. About to duct tape an umbrella to it so I can watch this UL/ND game.
Rolo, you had better let the goat sleep inside tonight. The snow is gonna get deep. At least to the goat-T
Not this far south
I don’t know but seems to me it isn’t staying sleet for long in the areas its changing over in.Wasn’t it suppose to sleet for a long while before it changed to snow and that was the reason for lower snow totals on the map.The whole state may end up with a foot of snow the way the radar is looking.
That’s what NWS was saying
Vinny…maria larosa is reporting live for weather channel go find her and get on TV…take max for a walk
Tim, I reply to you many times, but only about 10% get through… Hope this one does

NW Lexington, Heavy Snow, about 1″, that’s an inch an hour, since it started 100% snow around 7ish
I just saw an equivelent of the largest snowflakes and the heaviest snow I have ever seen! I can sense thundersnow in the air, you just have to be lucky to see it! Visibility is down to ONLY a hundred feet or so and winds are REALLY starting to gust blowing snow around. Absolutely crazy how quick things can change in an hour, and to think it was 60°+ yesterday!!! If snow continues at this pace, we will easily reach a foot. Right now I measured 1″ which most fell in the past 20 minutes! Definitely 3″ per hour rates!
In south Lexington
Yes! We’re in South West Lexington and it started sleeting hard here around 6:30, changed over to full snow about 7:00 and we already have at least 2.5 inches if not 3 on the ground – most of it falling in the past 30 minutes. It’s snowing incredibly heavily. Like you said, I could easily see those high (10+ inch) totals if this continues. And by the look of the map, it’s going to continue!
8 PM Total: 2.5″ and counting
Holy crap, always wanted to see it, but driving home about 30 minutes ago in SE Louisville had the biggest flash of lightning and the faintest sound of thunder. Finally some thundersnow I got to witness. Everything lit up.
So with it getting colder will the snow be less wet/heavy reducing risk for power outages? 27 degrees and snowing an inch an hour.
Very heavy sleet in Richmond
Its 8:12 and I’m beginning to get frustrated because it hasnt even started snowing here. Nothing but a cold rain.
Really huge snowflakes. In Burgin, approaching half inch inch in about 20 minutes. Have I forgotten how to measure or is this possible?
Half of an inch, not half inch inch. Autocorrect does not correct.
I live in Burgin also and main st. is covered. Huge flakes !!
I know Joyce! We are out by the KU plant and once the sleet changed to snow, it did not take long to start piling up. Curdsville road out this way is always in bad shape, so dread tomorrow.
I reckon it may still snow a few inches. Old lady gotta get out there and shovel no matter we get 2 or 12. I don’t know why she hatin on me for sayin it ain’t gonna be a big un.
On a ridge in Putnam County,WV. ( I-64). Starting snowing 30 minutes ago. Already a 1/2″. Mixed with sleet for the first 10 minutes then turned to all snow.
We just got back from a walk in the snow. Downtown Lexington. About an inch so far. Started about an hour ago.
Lightening in Louisville.
I meant lightning.
lightning as in a flash of light in the sky. Not lightening as in less snow. (sorry-lol)
what part of louisville
In the Lyndon area of Louisville, it’s been snowing since 4:30. I haven’t been out to measure, but using landmarks, I would say I’ve had at least 3 inches in four hours and probably closer to four. It has been a steady moderate to heavy snow and the temperature has dropped to 26 or so. Ratios are higher even though the flakes aren’t as large as they were at the start.
Carter Co. has seen that train arrive. We have an inch on the ground here in Grayson with those big ol’ flakes sticking on everything.
Transition from sleet to snow now happening in Richmond
Nothing I can see in Berea but rain. It amazes me at how big of a difference weather can be 10 min up the road …..bring on this snow ,,,,I love it
Just started mixing here in charleston, went from heavy rain, two minutes of sleet and now huge flakes mixing in
Big giant wet flakes at Clays Ferry in Fayette co. I let my dog out and she got knocked out by a flake.
saw this on Facebook from Severe Weather Concepts….
8:15 PM EST: The Storm Prediction Center has issued a mesoscale discussion for parts of the area. Heavy snow rates of 1-2″ per hour will be possible near and south of the river.
If you’re interested in the technical discussion, click here: http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/md/md0117.html
Looks like a dry slot is approaching from the southwest and could choke off the moisture to EKy….hope that fills back in.
Not till temps drop
Absolutely nothing but a 31.8 degree rain with a little sleet mixed in here in northern Lincoln. As a matter of fact, the “cold rain” shield appears to be lifting north now.
BigPoppaSnow
same thing in London … still at 37, was supposed to already be down to 32 …. even rain has stopped … a huge dry slot from TN all the way to probably Jackson Co happening now.
I’m in Lancaster and we have tons of sleet. Been sleet ing for over an hour. Roads are solid ice.
NW Lexington:
3.6″ in les then 3hrs..! It’s insane how hard it’s snowing, and it’s just getting started…
yep – some winter this has been in less than one month!
The next time we complain for puny winters in Dec and Jan, someone kick the crap out of us.
Wow – None in my part of Richmond — yet…
4 inch reports coming out of SW Jefferson County in Louisville
It looks like central KY is getting the heaviest snow now. I have about 3 inches near Iroquois Park.
Started at 7:00 pretty much on the dot in Boyd County & we have about 2 inches already on my hill.
9 PM Update: 3.75″ and snowing at well over an inch per hour
I easily have 4″ in NE Jefferson Co…. out to plow soon. Long night ahead.
Yes, a good 4″ in just 4 hours of changeover to snow.
Just shoveled the drive and cleaned off the cars. I will be shoveling in the morning. About 4 inches and no end in sight. Meh.
About 4 inches in frankfort and coming down hard, this might be a Overacheiving a bit so far, wow is all can say at this point!
3 inches here in Greenup and still pouring
Dry slots breaking up the system in central ky, if this continues well, what you see is what you got
That is a radar problem. I have been under a dry slot for at least 30 minutes and it’s snowing so hard I can barely see across the street.
Some radar data is not working… No dry slots with this storm, not yet as least
Hope you are right because it continues to expand…I would hate to get the dry slot after changing to snow.
Yeah just bad radar returns
Well, good bye lawn, it was nice to see you for a few hours.
Right at 3″ in Versailles. Incredible snowfall rate.
Surprised this band is basically setting up almost exactly at the same place as the last storm. Crazy how Lexington could get ANOTHER 10″+ storm all across central Kentucky! With this storm, it basically confirms the dome is busted. With the last storm I thought maybe its only a one time thing and another double digit snowstorm wouldn’t hit for another 15+ years. I’m glad I was wrong. Sorry far southern folks, looks like dome still lives in extreme south and east KY.
Yeah we needed an umbrella here 3+ inches of rain.
After 17yrs, it’s our turn..!
Have reach 4″ in NW Lexington, still heavy snow falling
0 inches in my part of Richmond. A dusting of sleet. Even though we had a great snow a couple of weeks ago (14 inches) I would love more!
We have about two inches in north Madison and falling heavy. Strange.
State of emergency has been issued for Floyd County IN.
4+ inches in south Louisville. Snowfall rates have been 1 inch per hour since it started. NAM says about another 0.65 of liquid. A foot might be in reach.
I am in Floyd County, Indiana…and it is absolutely horrible here.
I hope the dry slots work our way. Major flooding in SE Ky. Lives and homes are being threatened!
Nearly 3.5 inches of rain has fallen at my house
Yes Bob and mine is one.I also just heard that the Big Sandy river won’t crest till tomorrow in Pikeville at 38.8 feet Flood stage is 35 feet.It is going to be a long night. As I type the water is very close out behind my house, but all I can do is pray.
We are supposed to be at 11 ft above flood stage
I think central ky and northeast will be the snowfall winners
over an inch of sleet in hopkinsville now…wish it would switch to snow
Yeah in BG it’s been sleeting for 3 hours!
38 here in Carrie of knott co. Rain has slacked off to light rain
Still nothing but light ice pellets in Lincoln….looks like a major bust here. We were right on the 8-12 & 5-10 inch border.
Radar filled and nothing happening…. Strange!?
Closing in on 5 inches here in Greenup and still coming down hard
the ole DRY SLOT!!!
Louisville is officially at 7″ of snow at of all places the heat island (sdf airport).
You know it’s coming down at a high rate when the airport is reporting the highest totals in the city.
5″ at my place in NE Louisville. I really thought I just heard some thunder, but, It was probably just somebody’s loud truck driving through my subdivision.
SW Jefferson County getting impressive totals 7-8 inches
Not one flake in Pulaski County.
Same in Casey Co. Deck is covered in ice from rain.
Roads are absolutely awful in Bardstown. I barely made it home.
Rolo,
Last chance to save face. best be yellin’ old school! At least before the power goes out.
haha….that’s pretty funny right there.
did someone say bust?
He stuck to his guns and now using dry slot as a last chance. Now THAT is gumption! 🙂
I have been dry slotted right after the snow started, but I will take it because, well I will just say it, I’m ready for spring, which will be here in 96 hours for everyone
Snow seems to be having a hard time in Kanawha County WV tonight. It try to start then goes to sleet then stops and starts again. I also noticed what looks like a dry slot or an area where the precip is breaking up in southern KY on radar looks to be headed northeast. That will probably get here in time to cut the snow total way down.
Agree…the dry slot will cut totals way down for anyone east of Putnam County. That dry slot was suppose to be well east of us. Did not see that coming and the irony is that the Charleston NWS will be right on the original 2-4 inches call. To many things to overcome for a big snow in Charleston. If you want a big snow you have to go to the mountains or watch it on TV…lol
I couldn’t agree more. Perfect example was back on the 21st when Beckley got 20 inches and Charleston not a flake. I left work at 11 with just sleet and rain in Charleston got to Putnam Co. And almost 2 inches of snow.
It looks like the flood concerns were understated in the forecast, the snow maybe understated for the northern path and maybe overstated for the southern path.
That said, this is supposed to go on until late morning or longer, the further east.
Any snow for you Bubba? None in my part of Richmond… Wait, I just checked — about 1/4 inch at 10:15. Late start – I hope plenty more to come!
We have almost three inches now and falling heavy. That is wild just a few miles away and that difference.
Just checked – nothing else. About 1/2 inch total – maybe. Nothing falling – perhaps a light rain…
We have over three inches and medium snow falling.
CB says dry slot is real, my apologies.. I thought that was “radar data issues”. However, he said they should fill back in rather quickly.
Still coming down good in NW Lex, 4.5″ and no let up in site
Yep, but the stuff flowing this way will fill that in. The freeze line is heading east just past Richmond now.
Nearing 5″ at 10 PM. Snow plow just came through our neighborhood for the third time tonight.
The road and the yard is all the same now in Burgin. Still snowing very hard ! Love it !
I just measured 3.25 inches of snow here in Hamburg area of Lexington. Been snowing here since 7:30.
You have been waiting on it all day, I’m glad you got that snow
Thanks! 🙂
…and you’re ready to use your new shovel!
I definitely am! 🙂
Lexington is just getting hammered! I’m amazed at the radar and the little movement from west to east, but more flowing over the same areas…..
SW wind is king? I think not!
SW wind hanging tough in Charleston WV looks like snow/blue on radar but about 2 hours of sleet and it looks a dry slot is headed this way from the????? Southwest
Still raining in Clay County. We have lots of flooding here. Waiting on snow. Hurry up and get here!!!!!! We want snow too in southeast KY.
Currently at about 3.75″ in north Lexington (Paris Pike/Exit 113 area). Measured slightly above 2″ about an hour ago.
Unlike most people I’d LOVE a big Snow. Too bad Corbin once again loses out. The 6″ or so we got two weeks ago, is still nothing compared to what most got. I’m ready for another snow storm. Spring can wait.
3″ of snow as of 9:40. Probably 3.5 now and approaching 4″.
I believe that “Thor” really did “hammer” us this time with the snow! Still coming down in Spencer County.
So this will be it for the snow and cold until next winter right? LOL
Nothing but freezing rain and sleet in South Warren Co (BG). Zero snow accumulation. Should pick up a few inches overnight but definitely on the lower end of the totals here.
3″ and still coming down hard!…rain that is…
Side note, after last weekends snow thumping, I’ll gladly take some localized flooding over another week of slush and ugly melting snow (it’s only pretty for the first few hours after), shoveling for hours, trying to get to work unsuccessfully, and downed power lines that a good part of you will be dealing with. Thank God for some dry weather in the 60’s this coming week!!! 🙂
4″ in Bardstown, right in the heart of the town….started sleeting pea-sized around 5-6pm for a bit, then snow came in. I would estimate around 1″+ or so per hour RIGHT NOW (10:30pm) as I just went out w/ the doggies about an hour ago, and footprints/pawprints already snowed over! 🙂
Based on the flow on the radar shown above in the thread, it appears the flow of the path is more north than expected. That is unless the entire path is not covered yet.
Temp has held steady in Carrie of knott co at 38 for a while. Stil getting some rain
Zero snow in Berea and happy to keep it that way.
What we have seen is freezing rain. I seen to be having a hard time finding the freezing rain discussions and maps from previous posts this week.
Anyone who has a link to those post in a reply please.
Thanks.
As to whether or not the forecast understated the rain in this event, gee Bubba, yah think? #notafloodingevent
I could do without the unexpected freezing rain, but no snow = no shoveling, so on that part of the outcome I’m all kinds of happy.
Louisville absolutely getting crushed 9 inch reports showing up
Yep, it seems the system flow is more north than what the models were showing. Nowcast and radar is proof so far.
Just looking at the radar above, the system path appears 75 to 100 miles more north NE in comparison of the models an maps and more widespread.
Referring to the heaviest action.
So far. Is the coverage going to get the SE part of the state later?
Better way of wording is the heavy stuff appears to be more north and still covering the maps areas since appears more widespread. Could be some wild locally heavy numbers in the AM.
I agree Bubba southern Louisville to Etown a met saying possible someone could end up with 15 inches. Blowing and drifting of snow also occurring in Louisville.
how many inches of snow
for hart county KY now
Who?
how many inches for hart county KY
The snow is coming down so hard in northwest Lexington it’s ridiculous. and it’s blowing too…..It literally looks like that scene when Jim Cantore was screaming when he heard thunder snow in Boston. I’m waiting for thunder because this is intense!
This is just craziness! Never seen anything like this in the 12 years I lived here in Kentucky! Just lovin this.
Lawrenceburg/Anderson Co. issued a Code Red call a few minutes ago asking drivers to please stay off the roads. Police and Sheriff’s Dept overwhelmed with accidents. BG Pkwy closed at MM59. Haven’t measured at my house yet but looks to be around 6 inches so far.
6inches measured about 10mins ago in Masterson Station
Just measured 6.5″ in Lawrenceburg as of 11:00……still snowing heavily…….
Unless this stuff is going to be light snow from the rest of the night, the voice of reason appears to be understating totals even in Nowcast mode. Hubris is a ‘beach’.
CB though is sticking with his map, so my perception of more north and widespread appears incorrect then.
8 3/4 inches in Madisonville
Freezing rain started a while ago in Nashville, tree branches starting to get a little ice on them 🙁 . Hopefully a relatively quick change over to sleet and snow.
Bright banding showing up well on radar. Snowfall rates got to be in excess of 2 inches per hour in those bands. No lightning showing up on radar, yet. Beginning to think some areas may get that 18 inches after all. Kudos to the ECMWF for nailing these snowfall totals days ago.
Some parts of Louisville approaching 10 inches
Electric flickering here in Greenup…6 inches on the ground and snowing heavy
Will this pull any further south as it progresses? We’re in the 5-8 zone and from the looks of the radar there’s no way.
Cb said just now it should fill in later.
County’s along the ohio river are going from a 10:1 snow ratio to 15:1 more of a heavy powdery snow which accumulates faster
The radar shows a heavy snow band setting up across Shelby County and I can confirm that is the case. We are shooting for a foot, already over halfway there!
Has to be falling at a rate of 2″/hr. We jumped from 6″ to 7″ in 30 minutes!
Worried the drier air pulling in is going to rob NW KY of the high totals. At around 6″ now but radar looks like we may not see much more. Anyone know if the snow to the SW will be able to fight back against the drier air? Still sitting at 90% humidity.
I am a little slow sometimes and might be stating the obvious here… Does anyone not know that BubbaG is Chris Bailey?
Looks like a total bust here in Whitley county. Don’t think we’re even gonna make the low end of the total.
I just heard thunder!!!! Ahhh!!!!!!! In greenup
I don’t believe South Eastern Ky will ever change over to snow.. still pouring rain here. We are badly in bed of ARC..When will the Magoffin, Floyd Johnson Pike counties see a change over.
Shane Smith (WYMT) said it would be about 1 am.
in bed of a ARC..lol.. not bed..haha
NW Lex, 6.2″ and still pouring
It is now mixing in Salyersville, that or rain now weighs more than it did earlier.
Louisville might have a shot at the 24 hour record of 15.9 inches. Only been accumulating 6 hours and already 7-10 inches around the city. With at least 8 more hours of snowfall yet to come, records could fall! Shades of January 1994 all over again, minus the 4 inch per hour rates and thundersnow.
It thundered 10
Min ago here in Greenup county!
The future radar on the Weather Channel has the heaviest snow in south central Ky at 3 am.
Been snowing little over 5 hours and have right at 6 inches just south of Jackson ohio
Snow finally mixing in in South Warren Co. (BG). Roads are becoming covered real quick. Winds are howling and its coming down very rapidly. Its Cold!!! Think we will pick up 3-5 inches or so. Really interested to see the totals for Louisville, ETown, Lexington in the morning! Looks like they are getting hammered!!!
Yes we are getting hammered! Instead of pouring rain, it’s pouring snow. It’s just craziness.
I just looked at the radar again, its 11pm and looks like its going to be solid snow untill 5-6 AM here in Bowling Green. Heck we might pick up more than the 3-5 I just guessed. It was sleet for around 5 hours but what is coming down now is very rapid and looks to stay around for awhile.
Nice job CB, looks like you are going to be correct again while most of the other METS played off the whole thing and kept downplaying totals. Thanks for all of your hard work!!!
Chris Bailey rocks!
Approaching 6 inches in SW Lex., and still getting hammered. Got 25 degrees.
Measured just over 7.5″ in Shelbyville. Snow still coming down hard and wind is picking up.
Not that his popularity was not all the way through the roof but I think CB’s is going to be higher then ever. Others backed off there totals and CB stayed with the 8 – 14 inch range. Looks like he is going to be right. KUDOS!!!!
Voice of reason still saying 6 to 10 for areas already at the minimum or close. Does he not nowcast? 😉
The snow started in the Lyndon area of Louisville at 4:30. In seven hours, up till 11:30, I’ve picked up right at 7 inches. An inch an hour pace and the radar shows no signs of slacking off.
What a crazy past few weeks! Historic!
3.6 inches of rain in the last 24 hrs. Numerous roads closed in Knox whitley area
im glad for the rain, next week models are showing 70’s for the whole state maybe we can dry out while others melt, lol
Don’t hold your breath
Ah, it’s March spring will break anytime might as well be next week, most models think so
7-8 inches in east frankfort an still snowing big time!!
Have 8.5″ at my house in Georgetown. Coming down at about 2″ every 90 minutes.
No rain, no sleet, no snow, no problem in Pulaski county. The dome has retaken its capital city of Somerset.
8″ and still coming down at a great clip in NE Louisville.
Air temp at 21…high snow rates up to 15:1
Curious on the range others think Louisville could see for remainder of storm. I would think 3 – 6 more inches.
The NWS tweeted they expect 2-3 more downtown and 5 south and east of the city.
Louisville NWS updated totals at 9-12+ for a large swath of north central and central Kentucky recently.
Mother-in-law posted picture of my backyard a couple of hours ago. From the looks of that picture, I already had more snow than the 7.5″ from the last big one. She heard Valley Station would get at least 8-10″.
Couple of inches unless a band develops over us. Really looks like it is starting to move more south. E-Town,Bardstown,Lexington are going to be the big winners. I’ll take my consolation prize.
Wild how the bands are heavier in areas that are in the same path. Folks around your area are getting smacked hard with snow.
Same for Richmond. North has several inches more than the south of the city. Wild with the variation.
Just measured 9″ here in Shelbyville. That’s 3″ in one hour!
If we get thundersnow, I would not be surprised if it happened now. The intensity right now is almost unlike anything I have ever seen in SW. Lex
It thundered here in Greenup about 40 min ago!
Awesome. Hoping to hear one myself. I’ve only heard it once in my life…in Michigan during an 16 incher.
It was very brief but luckily I was outside lol
Coming up on 8 inches here in Greenup! Very windy also
Just went out to shovel the driveway here in Bardstown (Yes I know it will get covered again). I’d have to guess we have about 8 inches so far.
I think I asked before….where in Bardstown…I’m right behind the new Courthouse and I’m guessing around 5″…..?! (I measured almost 3″ awhile ago, but now have on my pj’s,go the kidlets settled down, etc…not gonna go measure! 😉
Woodlawn area. Definitely about 8 inches here. My employer didn’t care at all either. I feel so bad for my co workers that have to drive in this crap.
I just measured again…don’t know if it’s drifty or not, since the wind is blowing, but I got 8″ just now….(snow, I meant..lol! Been a long day….hehe!)
Yeah, my fiance works in Shep-Ville and altho he’s got a 4×4, if their workers can’t get home, etc, they will put them up in hotel rms. and go pick them up for work next day??! I was shocked when they let him off 3 hrs. early last snowstorm….lo!
Woodlawn? You might know some of my relatives…LOL! (the “Pile’s”…not the “Piles”…..unless you’re new to the area?!
I am on “their” road Debbie. 🙂 I think it’s despicable when employers find it ok to risk the lives of their employees for a few extra dollars.
Congrats to all my Kentucky friends/snowlovers. Looks like the heaviest of the snows will be with you. Just as I suspected the cold air is having a rough time rooting out the warm air here in WV and now it looks like the precip shield on radar is becoming lighter and thinning out. Most likely means the best moisture is exiting.
The radar looks fine to me
11 1/2 inches in Madisonville. WOW!
I can’t understand why the NWS (when they give hours temp precip reports) uses freezing fog when it’s heavy snow. WTH?
How much snow do you have now Mark? And how much total do you think we will get?
Thanks goodness the snowblower has gas in it from the last time. We have about nine inches and it is not done yet!
Starting snowing in my part of Hardin county around 6:30ish. It’s 12:30 and we have just over 11″. Wow! Going to bed now both anxious and excited about what I’ll wake up to. Be safe all!
9″ now in NE Louisville
if ur getting snow right now, which im not u r going see 5-7 inches more at least
What is the record for most posts from readers?
Pretty much stopped snowing in my part of WV, just a few flurries. It appears the dry air is now winning out. Looks like the best snows are from southern Ohio southwest into northern and western KY. We were in the 6 to 10 inch area. At this rate 3 inches will be a stretch.
Just went out with a tape measure (and in sandals lol) and we have 9 inches thus far in Bardstown.
Now…if I could just get my fiance to stay home tomorrow?! ()
Impressive total there, SHAAK! 😉 It’s just now covering up my footprints on the deck here….like I said…..the wind is blowing and everywhere I stick my ruler on a flat surface, it measures something diff. I’m gonna stick w/ the 8″ I last got….and go to bed….”Mr. Sandman” is a-callin’ my name! Enjoy the snow! 🙂
My wife is stuck in the Ville during this event Debbie. Perhaps we could be cuddle buddies for the night? lol
Where’s the 5 to 10 inches in SEky..lol
Looking at the radar, it appears nearly the whole state including SEKY will see significant snowfall. Moisture from this system extending well into central Texas. Big Blue Nation going to be Big White Nation.
Coming up on 9
Inches here in Greenup county (NE ky)
Chris Bailey how much snow will hart county KY get
bout tree fitty
Ben I tried to comment twice but it didn’t take. I think maybe 7 inches at this point, and looking at the radar I don’t know. I think it’s possible to end up with 11 of 12 inches? More? It depends on how that edge of the radar west of Louisville stays over Lex because it isn’t moving east very quickly…..but it is moving east a little……but it will take enough time to achieve that total I think…..Another record storm? Two within 3 weeks and let’s not forget the 5 inch snow lexington had too in Jan….that’s a decent snow too.
We need a 9 inch total or better from this storm in Lex and that will put us in the top ten snowiest winters on record. Amazing after the 17 year stretch of 3 to 4 to 5 inch snows.

10″ now in NE Louisville
over 10″ now in NE Louisville and still coming down.
Just measured 12.5 inches in Cecilia…15 mins west of Etown.
Still pouring snow. I am thinking 16 at least when its all said and done.
Just put down about 3 inches in 2 hours…now approaching 9 inches in SW Lex., and still coming down hard. Time to hit the sack…almost a bit nervous about what will be on the ground when I wake up.
I feel like I’m the only one awake! I’m a night owl 🙁
Anyway – Check this. As of 1:41 am 7.1 inches at KLEX officially. 30 inches exactly for the year, again as of 1:41 am. That is about an inch per hour based on when it started…..We need a little less than 5 inches to reach a foot of snow…….A little less than 2 inches to be in the top ten snowiest winters.
Me and my data!!
I think we will beat our record! I am sitting up just watching it pour down.
Was putting head to pillow when I could have sworn I heard a rumble here…not sure but is sounded like it (SW Lex.).
3″ so far in Bowling Green. We had sleet/freezing rain for 5 hours before changeover to all snow.
Measured 12.5″ in Franklin County as of 1:31am. I am sure it is probably over 13″ by now. It has been snowing at a rate of 1.5″ to 2″ an hour here Franklin County. LOVE IT!!!
