Good Tuesday to one and all. Our first round of heavy rain is rolling across the state today and could produce enough rain to cause high water issues. This overall setup has a rather threatening look to it through the upcoming weekend. Beyond that… winter tries to fight back in. Yay?!
Heavy rainfall will add up today through Wednesday with 1″-3″ of rain in many areas. This could lead to additional high water issues along creeks and streams that are feeding into already swollen rivers. You may even hear some thunder. I will have your tracking tools in a bit.
The next round of heavy rain and thunder rolls in late Thursday into Friday. That can drop another 1″-3″ of rain across our region. This is when we will have to also keep a very close eye on our rivers, because they will really be on the rise again.
I continue to maintain winter is not over and the longer range models show this well. Check out the GFS Ensembles from Weatherbell…
The 5 day average from the European Ensembles from around the same time…
That’s just ugly and would suggest we have not seen our last flakes of the season.
In the short-term, it’s all about the heavy rain potential. Let’s track…
I will have updates as needed. Take care.
Sounds like extreme weather continued for ky. Jjmp in and hang on, more wild rides ahead.
Iots of rain ahead. Not good for those who had flooding last week. Ground is already full of water. I need it to dry out so the people who was doing some yard work for me can bring some dirt in snd level everything up. He messaged me while back said he hadnt forgot me, weathers been too bad.
‘Tis the season for less comments.
Yup, just like the weather everything is seasonal comes and goes including the comment section.
These past few days have had the lest comments since December, and with that active November, it was even higher then. I ALWAYS read the blog everyday, but yeah, sometimes there’s not much to talk about.
I’ve been reading but also dealing with no power then no water then brown water then back to no water & scared to see what will happen next.
I read until the scary spring/summer storms hit then I hide. You’d think I’d wanna know what’s coming but no…I hide.
But maybe I’ll stick around so ya’ll can talk me from the ledge?! 🙂
don’t jump
Well, I’m afraid of heights too so…
I’m just a walking basket case.
uh…you live on a hill?
But it’s pretty.
When the comments are this far to the right, it’s ridiculous. Lol, and they’re so long.
A lot of times I try my best to keep the comment section interesting. I’ll usually post opinions, or maybe an article I find in boring times. Everyone should stick around, or at least post once in a while, escpecially rolo. I wonder what’s rolo’s forecast this summer? Old school rainstorm?
I wanna go back to winter storm Thor real quick. For all and I do mean all you naysayers out there that constantly complain over and over about how a old school snowstorm that would never happen, you can put that theory to rest and absolutely bury that comment.
Amen.
Winter storm Octavia dropped 16 to 18 inches for some and well over a foot for much of the state. I would say that counts as old school as well. Octavia gave me 16 inches and Thor delivered 8 inches. Two old school snows in a three week period.
Old school..yes, but keep in mind that not everyone in the state got the old school results. So I’m sure we’ll hear plenty of requests for an old school system in backyards across southern & parts of South Eastern KY.
It’s just so hard to get excited and comment about rain. But, I will always have my morning routine of waking up and reading this weather blog. It so awesome that CB keeps this up year round and we appreciate it!
Agree! Big shout out to Chris Baily! Come Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall he is the forecaster for all.
Thanks Chris!
I still check the blog nearly everyday during the year, but most of my comments are during winter and severe weather events.
Winter is indeed not over, but it won’t last forever either.
Snow this time of the year is usually heavy, but short lived. The blizzard in the early 90’s was a freak event. That fell the week before spring and lasted longer than you would think for spring.
Not saying that is the case here. Warm air will start winning again real soon 🙂
Lots of rain ponding on roads. This appears to be a lot of rain on saturated ground. Concerning.
Prelude – I know right! Not one, but two old schools in 3 weeks. Even after the fact, it’s still sinking in. I knew deep down that this would happen again here, but never did I imagine two of them so close. I would get bummed out of a snow didn’t verify, but I never did the naysayer thing. Frankly, I think I’m good for a couple or three years as far as big snows go.
As far as the rain, it’s so weird how KY can be such a magnet for moisture from the gulf. We have so many heavy rain events it seems.
With weather never say never. There will be another storm that will rival and beat Octavia and Thor. Might happen next year it might be 20 yrs but it will happen.
Just like history, weather repeats itself. We WILL break the record snow season again, because record are made to be broken. Next year, or could be 100 years.
Thanks Chris. Although I don’t mind rain this is really not what we need right now, especially those folks dealing with a lot of snow melt and wet grounds. I saw the pictures of the Cumberland Falls. Been a while since I have seen the falls that way. My thought is that its only going to get worse. Hoping everyone near flood prone areas stays safe and dry. Have a great Tuesday everyone. Thanks again Chris, for taking the time on your time off to keep us updated.
Good Lord almighty Kait Parker from TWC is in Louisville covering the snow melt leading to minor river flooding. She is absolutely a thing of beauty.
The snow/ice keeps hanging on like Tony Montana at the end of Scarface. I’m still standing!
These potholes are getting to the size of small craters they are nasty they’ll do a number on your front end, tires, rims etc etc…. You got love the potholes that are filled with water those are a complete treat you think your driving through a puddle until you hit it pothole is 3 feer deep and 18 inches wide you hit the pothole with such force that your car thinks you just got involved in a accident and your airbags deploy.
yes, the city is going to have a great deal of work to do this spring.
I have nothing nice to say about winter returning… 😛
Going, going, going….. gone… (the snowmelt)
Alas, it is indeed that time of year where the number of comments starts dropping significantly. I’m guilty of it myself. Even though I may read the blog every day outside of Winter, I don’t comment very much.
I love Winter and hate to see it go. I dread Summers around here. I hate the days where the humidity is so thick you can take a bite of the air as soon as you walk out your door. I’ve got my fingers crossed that this coming Summer won’t be too bad. Heck, it’d be perfectly fine with me if we just skipped to October once April was over!
I whine about summer and winter. Fall and spring are my happy seasons 🙂
That is about what I do.I whine when its to hot and I whine when its to cold.To much snow,to little snow,to much rain, not enough rain.
Then we have pollen and bug bites, etc, etc.
I wouldn’t have much to take about apparently if it were not for the weather..Fall is my favorite time for sure.Always love that first crisp evening after dealing with heat.
The amount of comments is kind like a social weather meter for events. Not much going on, not many comments 🙂
There really isn’t much to say about rain.
This winter has seemed alot like the 76-77 Winter and I think I even saw Chris mention that back in Nov or Dec. If that is the case and it pans out we had the biggest flood Ive ever seen in April of 77 here in Pike Co. I was only 9 then but I can still see the houses raging down the Tug River and slamming into to each other made an explosion sound and turned the houses into toothpicks. That flood is what started my fascination with weather. Just to see what mother nature can do still blows my mind sometimes. If we have another flood like that one things around here will be shut down for months. Just hope and pray people are prepared for it. Thanks Chris for all your hard work.
Snow is gone now. To bad the rain has to fall. Otherwise would be rather nice. Such a muddy mess. I just hope the flooding does not get too much worse for those who have dealt with that. But the ground is saturated. Just hope everyone stays safe.
Rain rain rain rain rain…ugh
We had mini drought this winter, so we are getting it all in the last weeks 😉
Not 15 miles south of you there wasn’t. We’ve been close to or at saturation almost all winter and definitely since mid-Jan.
Before Snowmageddon 1 and Snowmageddon 2, I was thinking how dry January into February had been for Central KY… Usually we get the nasty cold rain, but we hadn’t even had much of that. Now, we’ve got too much of a good thing.
Not only have we not seen our last flake, I will go as far to say we have not seen our last accumulating snow (meaning 1″ or more).
I think the NWS has one more advisory level winter weather event to go.
Possible to see at least an I64 special.
There’s the spirit Bubba….the famous I-64 dividing line. lol
More north, so more likely to be on the north side of an event.

It snowed last April, we got about two inches and it lasted for a whole day, pretty good for an April snow. So I went and found the link, you never know with winter.
It’s amazing, the radar loop from last April at that link looks EXACTLY like today!
Well… that radar loop IS today’s loop. They look the same because it is the same. The “Widgets” that CB puts on his blog update to current even though it’s years old. Here’s an example

Those are today’s outlook, not March 2, 2012 outlook.
I know, bro 🙂
Should have put the tags on I guess.
You know if we keep commenting on the lack of comments on here,we will have a lot of comments….
Well I read every day no matter the season. I prefer Summer.
So true, look at how many comments already. I bet if I wouldn’t have mentioned the lack of comments, there wouldn’t be so many comments on this post today. Haha
After driving around Fayette county the last two days, this is official.

Long time lurker. Seldom poster. Just trying to increase the numbers. 🙂
Flood warnings here in NE ky
Ever since nearby Morgan County had two tornadoes in less than 2 days, I ALWAYS check this weather blog. It’s true, you never know what weather will hit here in Kentucky, so I feel that what Chris says that’s what I had better expect. Also, I love snow and the forecasts for snow. A snow forecast builds so much anticipation on this blog that it’s fun to read all the comments from old school to goats and dome busters. Thanks Chris for your hard work and dedication in getting us the most accurate forecasts possible.
I’m just wondering how ugly the “ugly” is for next week.
Finally got home today. Took some back roads in Kentucky to go around I-65 snafu and saw Gasper River in southern Ky out of its banks, Green river flooding bottomlands, Salt river near Shepherdsville overflowing since it cannot empty anything into the rising Ohio river, and arrived home to a muddy mess with water starting to seep into the basement. Hopefully it will dry out some the next couple of days before the next round.
