Good Saturday, everyone. By early March standards, this is a very tropical feeling weekend across the bluegrass state. Warm temps and high humidity levels will join forces with low pressure to our west to produce rounds of showers and storms.
A warm front swings northward across the state early today and could spark a shower or thunderstorm. Temps then take off with readings heading into the 70s for many areas. Dew point temps make a run at 60 degrees, but really take off tonight and Sunday. Look at the dew point numbers for Sunday…
That’s impressive for this time of year and could help spawn a few strong thunderstorms. Watch how the storms increase this evening into early Sunday…
That’s from the Hi-Res NAM, and it is showing the potential for streaks of torrential rains. through Sunday…
That shows some pockets of 4″+ of rain from some of the stronger thunderstorms. Given the wet ground in many areas, that could cause additional high water issues.
The scaled down NAM has a more uniform look with the rainfall…
Given the high humidity levels and thunderstorms in the mix, we will really need to be on guard for possible flash flooding across western and central Kentucky.
Looking down the road, we find winter trying to fight back by the end of the week into next weekend…
Sigh.
Your Saturday tracking toys…
I will have updates as needed. Enjoy your Saturday and take care.
It can try and fight back, but winter will not win.
It really isn’t worth talking about winter because it will last for a few days here and there from time to time between now and the end of April. I just don’t think this will be one of those 1 in 25 years that we will get a big April snow. If it does, it will last about one day with ground temps approaching 55 degrees or so now.
All I hear people say around here is, “Oh we get the biggest snows in April.”
Really? We get a big snow like once every 20 or 30 years in April. The last one was April 5th, 1987–I was 4 years old!
Terry, all that means is we are due. It’s been a loooong time but we have had big snows in April. We actually had snow on April 15, 2014. Not a big snow, but the ground was white. I have pictures of it.
It went SPRING very quickly around here! Until next November, Rodger in Dodger says have a good one!
You also, Roger..…..although we are entering the traditional peak severe wx season for our area. As shown by this 2012 link, Chris Bailey is on top of severe storms:

So this blog would be a handy place to check back to if nature rears its ugly head. Let’s hope this will be the fourth relatively quiet spring in a row, although our luck can’t last forever.
Also a great idea for everyone to have their phones, wx alert radios and other early warning devices ready for this severe season.
Interestingly, tomorrow will mark 23 years since the infamous Blizzard of 1993. That was back when I was a pre-teen and when I actually…….. liked snow 😉 .
Weather sure has been nice over the last week. I got lot of work done on my ham /cb antenna and coax cable that burned up during feburary during a small brush/forest fire.
Im in full spring mode, dont look gorward to any snow till fall of the year.
Thanks chris for the update.
Thanks Chris. I’ve been seeing some jonquils in several places. That usually means spring isn’t too far away. Must say I am like everyone else. I’m ready for it. But I also know there are those “winters” we have to go through to get there. Guessing the colder weather popping up next weekend is the beginning of them. Easter is two weeks away and Dogwood winter always happens somewhere around then, be it early or late. Then there was the thunder in February. My Momma always said if it thundered in February, it would frost in May. And it just about always does. But I reckon we will go through them and be just fine. As far as a little thunder overnight, bring it. It will make for good sleeping weather. Have a great rest of your Saturday everyone. Thanks Chris, for all you do!
We go through a few more cold snaps, but blooming plants do not magically cause them.
